LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowgirls ended their 1998 regular season this last weekend by going 1-1, in defeating Air Force and losing to UNLV, both matches on the road. UW finished the regular season with a record of 15-13 overall, 10-4 in WAC matches.
Wyoming's first match of the weekend was on Friday, Nov. 21, against the Air Force Academy, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Cowgirls won the match in dominating fashion by beating the Falcons 15-10, 15-1, 15-5, to take the match 3-0.
After a close game one, UW used a strong hitting percentage of .529 in game two to clobber AFA 15-1, leaving no doubt as to who would win the match. The Cowgirls would then finish off Air Force 15-5 in the final game.
Wyoming was led by Jami Laya who had 14 kills, with a .400 hitting %, and Anne Stohrer who had nine kills, for a .444 hitting %.
The Cowgirls second match of the weekend was on Saturday, Nov. 22, against UNLV, in Las Vegas, Nevada. This match would be the exact opposite of the Air Force match as UNLV would end up defeating UW by a score 3-0.
The Cowgirls appeared to be up to the Rebels challenge in game one as they narrowly lost 15-13, but that would be as close as Wyoming would get for the rest of the match. UNLV would hit .769 in the second game and shutout UW 15-0, and then the Cowgirls would also drop the third game by a score of 15-6.
UW was led by Jessica Zehr who had a .308 hitting % against the Rebels.
The Cowgirl volleyball team is in Las Vegas, Nevada, this week to compete in the 1998 WAC Tournament.
