The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (22-10 overall, 7-9 in the MWC) closed out the 2010 regular season with a three set loss (27-29, 14-25, 20-25) against the Utah Utes (17-14 overall, 11-5 in MWC), on Friday night, in Laramie.

"The four seniors have been a solid foundation to our program since I came to Wyoming," said head coach Carrie Yerty. "They've been great ambassadors to our program and the university. Unfortunately, it's hard to lose these last two. I think the match could have gone very differently if we could have pulled out that first set. Overall, I'm really proud of this team and how they fought all year, plus the improvement from when I got here and even this season. We're going to take in this year and celebrate the wins that we had."

Senior Lauren Whitney led the a team high 12 kills while adding five digs. She was followed by Jodi Purdy with eight kills and JennaRae Jester with seven kills and a team high five blocked shots. Becky Stewart finished with 12 digs. The Cowgirls hit .088 (40-29-125) for the match.

With the score tied up at ten all, Wyoming scored four of five to give them a three point advantage, 14-11. Utah answered with a 5-2 run to pull them even at 16 all. It continued to go back and forth until UW went up 22-20. Utah tied it up at 22 but the Cowgirls scored the next two points to earn set point, 24-22. The Utes continued to battle back and held off two set points to make it 24-24. Wyoming would score the next point but unfortunately Utah scored the final five of seven to win the set, 29-27.

The momentum continued on the side of the Utes as they took a 7-1 lead to begin the second set. Wyoming would go on a small run to narrow the margin to four, 10-6. They would inch closer to make it 13-10, but the Utes scored four of six to extend the lead back to five, 17-12. The Cowgirls would pull to within four, 18-14, but unfortunately the Utes ran off the final seven points to win the set, 25-14, and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, Utah took a small 3-0 lead. The Cowgirls went on a 4-1 run to make it 4-4. The two teams traded scores until the Utes gained a three point advantage, 9-6. Wyoming scored 6 of 11 to pull within two, 14-12, but Utah ran off five of seven to extend it to 19-14. The Cowgirls wouldn't go away quietly as they closed the margin to one, 19-18. Unfortunately, that would be as close as they would get as the Utes won the set, 25-20, and the match 3-0.
