The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (20-13 overall, 10-9 MW) continued their winning streak with a three set win (25-23, 25-21, 25-20) over the UNLV Rebels (16-13 overall, 11-8 MW) on Thursday night. The Cowgirls have now won six consecutive matches and 20 wins on the season.
Two Cowgirls led the way in double-figures led by senior Reese Plante and junior Erin Kirby. "I think we are just playing well and good volleyball," said head coach Chad Callihan. "The players are feeling more comfortable and not thinking about it anymore. Through the first half of the season that was an extended preseason for us as late as we got in here. We implemented some new things and it takes time. I give the team a tremendous amount of credit for sticking with it and continuing to improve."
It was all even through the first eight points of set one until a 4-1 run by the Rebels gave them an 8-5 advantage. An attack error by UNLV ended the scoring drought for UW but three out of the next four points gave them an 11-7 advantage. Two straight points from the Cowgirls brought the score to within two, 11-9. The Rebels would increase the lead back to four, 14-10, which was answered with a 6-1 run by Wyoming to give them their first lead of the set, 16-15. UNLV tied it up on the next side out and the two teams traded scores over the next several points. With it all even at 19, UW scored the next two giving them a 21-19 lead, which they would increase to set point 24-21. UNLV battled back and closed to within one, 24-23, but a kill by Bridget Shanahan gave the Cowgirls set one, 25-23.
The second set started off similar to the first with it all tied up at four. Two straight hitting errors put UW up 6-4, but the Rebels scored four straight to take the lead 8-6. After a kill by Erin Kirby ended the run, UNLV ran off three straight to go ahead by four, 11-7. The Cowgirls rallied with an 8-2 run to take a two-point lead, 15-13. The Rebels recorded the next two points, which was answered with three points to go up 18-15. Two kills by UNLV made it a one point set, 18-17, but the Cowgirls scored five of the next seven making it 23-19. They would hold off a Rebel comeback as they won the second set, 25-21, to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
UNLV took a slight 6-4 lead to begin the third set. The Cowgirls responded with seven straight points to go up by five, 11-6. The Rebels chipped away at the deficit and closed the gap to two, 12-10. A 6-2 run from Wyoming increased the lead back to six, 18-12. They maintained a lead the rest of the set despite being outscored 13-7. The Cowgirls would win the set by five, 25-20, and the match, 3-0.
The Cowgirls will close out the regular season on Friday, November 29, as they host the San Diego State Aztecs. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. in the UniWyo Sports Complex.
