The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (21-13 overall, 11-9 MW) closed out the 2013 season with a four-set win (25-22, 21-25, 25-20, 25-22) against the San Diego State Aztecs (16-14 overall, 11-9 MW) on Friday night. The Cowgirls close out the season on a seven match winning streak and recorded their tenth 20-plus win season in school history.
Two Cowgirls finished the night in double-figures led by sophomore Bridget Shanahan. She recorded a team high 13 kills, while adding five total blocks. Middle blocker Erin Kirby had 11 kills, ten total blocks and hit .458 (11-0-24) for the match. Becky Stewart had 22 digs and Rachel Keyes finished with 42 assists in their final matches. Wyoming hit .225 (48-17-138) and had 15.0 total team blocks.
San Diego State was led by Emily Harris with 13 kills plus five blocks. Baylee Little and Summer Nash each finished with 11 kills each. Little also recorded seven total blocks and hit .450 (11-2-20). The Aztecs hit just .134 (59-37-164) on the night and had 14.5 total team blocks.
"I was proud of the way the group performed tonight," said head coach Chad Callihan. "They showed a lot of pride and heart. We didn't necessarily play or execute at a top level throughout the night. We hit stretches where it was a bit of a rollercoaster, but they did a good job of staying poised and continuing to grind."
The Cowgirls jumped out early to a 4-1 lead to begin the match. San Diego State answered with a 6-2 scoring run to take their first lead, 7-6. Wyoming tied it up on the next side out and the two teams traded scores over the next couple of points until five straight points by UW put them up four, 13-9. After a kill by Summer Nash ended the Aztec scoring drought, the Cowgirls got the lead back to five, 15-10. SDSU chipped away at the deficit and pulled to within one, 16-15. Wyoming scored four of the next five points to regain a four point lead, 20-16. The Aztecs wouldn't go away easily as they closed the gap to one, 23-22. The Cowgirls held on and scored the next two points to win set one, 25-22.
It was all tied up through the first eight points of the second set. The Cowgirls would score five of the next seven points to take a small 9-7 lead. San Diego State tied it up at ten and the two teams traded the next couple of points. Wyoming gained a small 15-13 advantage, but the Aztecs scored the next five of six to go up two, 18-16. The Cowgirls scored two points to tie it up at 18. San Diego State regrouped and closed out the set on a 7-3 run to win it 25-21.
In the third set, it was all even at three until five straight points by Wyoming put them up five, 8-3. A kill by Raegan Shelton started a 4-0 run by the Aztecs to pull them to within one, 8-7. Two straight kills by the Cowgirls put them up three, 10-7, which was answered by four of the next five by SDSU to tie it up at 11. Attack errors by Nash gave UW a two-point lead, 13-11. The Aztecs inched closer and eventually tied it up at 16. Wyoming rallied with four straight points to go ahead by four, 20-16. A kill by Emily Harris ended the skid for SDSU making it a three point set, 20-17. The Cowgirls scored the final 8 of 11 points to win the third set, 25-20, to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Wyoming scored five of the first eight points to go ahead 5-3. San Diego State went on a 4-1 run giving them the lead 7-6. A kill by Plante tied it up on the next side out, but the Aztecs scored three straight making it 10-7. After a Wyoming timeout, two points by the Cowgirls brought them to within one, 10-9. They would tie it up at 12 and then take a 15-13 lead, which was answered by four of the next five by SDSU making it 17-16. They would increase that margin to three 21-18, but the Cowgirls fought back and scored the next three to tie it up at 21 all. Baylee Little recorded a kill to give the Aztecs a 22-21 advantage, which was followed by a Shanahan kill to make it 22-22. Three straight hitting errors by San Diego State to close out the match gave Wyoming the set, 25-22, and the match, 3-1.
