Cowgirl Volleyball Signs One Student-Athlete

April 23, 2004

Laramie, Wyo. -- University of Wyoming Cowgirl head volleyball coach Pat Stangle today announced another addition to the Wyoming squad with the signing of one student-athlete to a national letter of intent to attend the University of Wyoming beginning in the fall of 2004.

Rachel Smith, 5-11, Outside Hitter, Thousand Oaks, Calif. (Westlake HS): A First Team All-Marmonte League selection this past season at Westlake High School. As a senior, she was also named a Team Captain, Most Dedicated and to the All-Tournament Team. During her junior year, Smith was named First Team All-CIF and the Marmonte League Player of the Year. She also helped her team to a 22-4 overall record and a spot among the Top 16 in the CIF Division II State Championship in that same year. A three-year letterwinner in volleyball, she was coached in high school by Doug Magorien. An excellent student, she has been a member of the honor roll throughout high school. Rachel is the daughter of Ken and Sonya Smith. She chose Wyoming over several schools, including Eastern Washington, Northern Arizona, and Portland State, among others.

"We are very excited that Rachel has decided to join our program," said head volleyball coach Pat Stangle. "She brings a lot of the qualities we look for in a recruit. Specifically, she is a good volleyball player and has a strong desire to improve. We look forward to moving Wyoming Volleyball in the right direction with players like Rachel."

Smith is the sixth student-athlete to sign a letter of intent by the Cowgirls season as they signed five during the early signing period. The other signees include Shelby Heggie (6-2, OH/MB, Laramie, Wyo.), Angie Hellbaum (5-10, OPP, Wheatland, Wyo.), Lauren Scott (6-1, MB, Lone Tree, Colo.), Andrea Tuck (6-1, OH, Erie, Colo.) and Jenny Vogelgesang (5-10, S, Ft. Wayne, Ind.).
