University of Wyoming head volleyball coach Carrie Yerty announced today the hiring of Vilis Ozols (Vilis like Bilas, O Zools) as an assistant coach with the Cowgirl volleyball program. Ozols replaces Tony Suñga who became the head coach at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
"I am extremely pleased to have the opportunity to welcome Vilis to our Cowgirl staff and volleyball family," said head coach Carrie Yerty. "He is extremely passionate about coaching, an outstanding technician and will be a great asset to our future recruiting. Vilis is an excellent communicator and one of the most positive motivators I have ever met. I am very fortunate and proud to have such a veteran well rounded staff."
Ozols comes to Wyoming from the University of Colorado where he spent last season as an Assistant Coach with the Buffs. He has an extensive background in the sport of volleyball.
"I am very excited to join Coach Yerty and the Wyoming volleyball program," said Ozols. "I have very high expectations for what will be accomplished here and I am looking forward to contributing in as many ways as possible to that success on the court, in the classroom and in the Wyoming community."
Prior to CU, he coached Denver's Mullen High School from 2007-2010. He led them to top-ten state finishes in those four years (second, third, seventh and ninth-place finishes) and the first Centennial League Conference Championship in the school's 66-year history. The team also won the District and Regional Championships three times. Several of his former players moved onto collegiate volleyball careers. Previous to that, he coached several club and All-Star teams, which helped him earn a Canadian National Championship.
Ozols played collegiate volleyball at the University of Guelph in Canada and was a four-time First Team All-Conference selection, a three-time conference player of the year and was inducted into the UG's Athletic Hall of Fame. He is also a former Canadian Jr. National Volleyball Team member (NORCECA Silver medalist, Jr. World championship qualifier), a First Team All-Canadian selection and a former competitor on the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour.
He has an MBA from the UC-Denver and is the founder and president of the Ozols Business Group. He is an international business speaker who has presented to audiences on three continents, in nine countries and in all 50 U.S. states.
