LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Four teams that competed in post-season play will be featured on the 2010 Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball schedule, announced Tuesday by the Wyoming Athletics Department.
Colorado State, New Mexico, Northern Colorado and TCU all competed in the NCAA Tournament a year ago, while CSU finished the season ranked in the final AVCA Coaches Poll.
The Cowgirls will open pre-season play with their first two out of three weekends at home. They will host the UniWyo Wyoming Invite with matches against Central Arkansas and Southern Utah, on Friday, August 27, followed by Murray State and Northern Arizona, on Saturday, August 28.
Out on the road for the first time in 2010, they will travel to Florida for the Stetson University Invitational with matches against Bethune Cookman, Florida Atlantic, Stetson and Wofford, Friday-Saturday, Sept. 3-4. That will be followed by the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic, Sept. 10-11, with Boise State, Northern Colorado, Portland and UT-Arlington coming to Laramie.
Things get wrapped up Friday-Saturday, Sept. 17-18 at the Gonzaga Invitational. Wyoming will play Gonzaga, on Friday, Sept. 17, with matches against Idaho and Seattle University on the following day. They will also have one non-conference match against Colorado Christian, on Tuesday, Oct. 19, mixed in with the conference schedule.
"We have put together a competitive schedule for this team," said UW head coach Carrie Yerty. "It's exciting to have the opportunity to host two tournaments in the UniWyo Sports Complex which will allow our fans to see this team. The experience we will gain in playing 15 matches during the pre-season will help us build confidence with the line-up and ourselves prior to heading into MWC action. The conference will also be a tough challenge with the high level of play from every team. Overall, we are excited about the quality of competition we are playing."
Mountain West Conference matches will be played primarily on Thursdays and Saturdays, with one Wednesday and Friday match to close out the season. The Cowgirls will begin MWC play on the road, Thursday, Sept. 23, against the Utah Utes, and Sept. 25, against the BYU Cougars in Provo. Their home schedule will kick off on Saturday, Oct. 2, as they host the San Diego State Aztecs at 7 p.m. in the UniWyo Sports Complex.
Head coach Carrie Yerty enters her third season with the Cowgirl Volleyball Program. She returns six starters and eight letterwinners, including 2009 MWC Freshman of the Year Jodi Purdy, from a team that went 13-18 overall and 3-13 in the Mountain West Conference a year ago.
