LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Two teams that competed in post-season play will be featured on the 2012 Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball schedule, announced Thursday by the Wyoming Athletics Department. Ball State and Colorado State participated in the NCAA Tournament a year ago, while CSU finished the season ranked in the final AVCA Coaches Poll.
The Cowgirls will open preseason play with their first two weekends at home. They will host the UniWyo Wyoming Invite with matches against Presbyterian College and San Francisco, on Friday, August 24, followed by Eastern Washington and Seattle, on Saturday, August 25.
They will remain at home with the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic the following weekend, Aug. 31-Sept. 1. Wyoming will play Bethune Cookman and George Washington the first day with matches against Florida Gulf Coast and UMKC on Saturday.
Out on the road for the first time in 2012, they will travel to Kansas for the Kansas Jayhawk Classic with matches against Arizona State, College of Charleston and Kansas, Friday-Saturday, Sept. 7-8.
Things get wrapped up Friday-Saturday, Sept. 14-15 at the Ball State Tournament. Wyoming will play Pittsburgh and Wright State, on Friday, and the host school Ball State, on Saturday.
They will also have two non-conference matches against CSU-Pueblo, on Monday, Oct. 1, and Regis University, on Tuesday, Oct. 30, mixed in with the conference schedule.
"Wyoming Volleyball is excited to announce the schedule for the 2012 volleyball season," said head coach Carrie Yerty. "We believe that we have positioned ourselves through more aggressive scheduling to compete at a level that will improve our RPI and garner respect for potential post season opportunities. I believe that the Mountain West will be a solid volleyball league and should see multiple teams with possible post season opportunities."
Mountain West Conference matches will be played primarily on Thursday's and Saturday's, with two Friday matches. The Cowgirls will begin things on the road with one single match against the New Mexico Lobos, on Saturday, Sept. 22. They will kick off their home MW schedule on Thursday, Sept. 27, against the San Diego State Aztecs and league newcomer Nevada, on Saturday, Sept. 29. Both matches will be played in the UniWyo Sports Complex.
Head coach Carrie Yerty enters her fifth season with the Cowgirl Volleyball Program. She returns all six starters and nine letterwinners, including 2011 All-MWC selection Jodi Purdy, from a team that went 21-11 overall and 9-5 in the Mountain West a year ago.
