LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Outside hitter Jodi Purdy represented the Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball program while traveling with America International Sports Tours, May 24-June 3, in Italy.
Purdy along with nine other college student-athletes toured through several Italian cities including Rome, Tuscany, Florence, San Marino Republic and Milan. They played a total of five matches during that time finishing with a record of 3-2. They earned victories against APD Nautilus Roma, Pallavolo Teodora Ravenna and CS Alba.
"Overall, it was an incredible experience," said Purdy. "I met some great people and played against tough competition while improving my overall game."
In order to join a team, the tours are by invitation only which must be selected by AIST or a coach. The teams are made up of NCAA Division I, II, III, Junior College and NAIA student-athletes.
In February, Purdy was among a record number of 204 athletes to participate in the open tryouts for the U.S. Women's National Team, U.S. Women's National A2 program and U.S. Women's Junior National Team in Colorado Springs. Of the 204 tryout participants representing 81 different colleges were 56 outside hitters, 51 middle blockers, 46 liberos, 27 setters and 24 opposites.
A First Team All-Conference selection in 2010, Purdy started in all 31 matches for the Cowgirls, while playing in 109 sets last season. She averaged a team leading 3.21 kills and 3.95 points, while adding 2.61 digs. In conference matches, she averaged 3.16 kills, 2.93 digs and 3.82 points per set.
Wyoming finished the 2010 season with a 22-10 overall record and a 7-9 mark in MWC play. The Cowgirls are set to open the 2011 season, Friday-Saturday, August 26-27, as they host the UniWyo Wyoming Invite.
