LARAMIE, Wyo. -
University of Wyoming head volleyball coach Susan Judge announced today the hiring of Jon Stevenson as an assistant coach with the Cowgirl volleyball program. Stevenson's hiring is subject to UW Board of Trustee approval. He will join Judge's staff effective July 1.
Stevenson, 41, comes to Wyoming from the UC San Diego Men's Volleyball program, where he has been the head coach for the past season. Prior to his time at UC San Diego, he worked extensively with the men's pro volleyball tour, as a player, coach and administrator. He served as the President of the AVP, the players' association that governs the US professional men's beach tour, from 1989-95 and as the Director of Tour Operations from 1996-98. He also had coaching stints with the UC Santa Barbara (1987-88) and Santa Barbara City College (1985-86) men's volleyball programs.
Stevenson, a native of Manhattan Beach, Calif., played collegiate volleyball at UC Santa Barbara, where he earned his degree in psychology in 1980. His professional career would cover 15 years, in which he won 23 open tournaments, two Grand Prix Championships and was twice named the Defensive Player of the Year in 1988 & 89. He was inducted into the Beach Volleyball Hall of Fame in 1995, the California Beach Volleyball Hall of Fame in 1996 and the Nike "Legends of the Beach" in 1997.
"I'm excited to enter the competitive environment of Division I Womens Volleyball," said Stevenson. "I look forward to making a positive contribution to the continued success of Cowgirl Volleyball. It's encouraging to work alongside Coach Judge, Coach Simon and with the fine group of student-athletes that make up the Wyoming volleyball team."
"We're very fortunate to have the opportunity to hire a person of Jons capabilities," said head volleyball coach Susan Judge. "His playing experience, and exposure to the highest level of volleyball will be invaluable to our program. We look forward to implementing some of his thoughts and ideas into the Wyoming volleyball program."
