Callihan Adds Belzung To UW Volleyball Staff

July 1, 2013

University of Wyoming head volleyball coach Chad Callihan announced today the hiring of Kristin Belzung as an assistant coach with the Cowgirl volleyball program.

"We are very excited to have Kristin join our staff," said Callihan. "She is going to bring a great work ethic and her ties to various clubs through USA Volleyball will have an impact on our recruiting as we move forward. Having played at Northern Iowa, Kristin understands what it takes to build a championship caliber program and I can't wait for the newest Cowgirl to get started."

Belzung comes to Wyoming after spending the past three seasons at South Dakota State as an assistant coach. While with the program, she assisted in organizing training and practice and was primarily responsible for setter training. Belzung also helped with opponent scouting and match planning, plus coordination of team travel.

"I am honored and excited for the opportunity to join Coach Callihan and the Cowgirl Volleyball program," said Belzung. "The University of Wyoming is a first class institution and I look forward to working with a talented group of student-athletes. The future is bright for Cowgirl Volleyball under Coach Callihan's leadership."

Prior to that, she spent two years at South Carolina, where she spent her first season as a graduate assistant and the second as the director of operations for the Gamecock volleyball program. As the director of ops for the Gamecocks, Belzung assisted with practice setup and helped out with many of the administrative tasks for the team, including travel and video coordination.

Before starting her coaching career, Belzung was a four-year standout setter at Northern Iowa while playing for Bobbi Peterson. A two-time first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection, she ranks fourth in UNI history with 4,256 assists and with an 11.3 assists per game average. Belzung also led her squad in aces twice and helped the team to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances in 2006 and 2007, earning the State Farm MVC Tournament MVP in her squad's first of two straight conference tourney crowns. She also recorded two triple-doubles in her career, including one in a victory over Clemson in 2006.

A native of Ankeny, Iowa, Belzung starred in the classroom as well, earning the State Farm MVC Good Neighbor Award, an honor recognizing athletes for their excellence in academics, sportsmanship and community service. She also garnered Dean's List recognition in six of her nine semesters at UNI and twice earned a spot on the MVC Scholar-Athlete first team. Belzung served as a SAAC representative and participated in the NCAA National Leadership Conference.

Belzung graduated with a bachelor's degree in health promotion/environmental health from Northern Iowa in 2008, and completed her master's degree in sport and entertainment management from South Carolina in the spring of 2010.
