Cowgirl Volleyball Selected Fifth In Preseason Poll

Laramie, Wyo. - In a poll of the nine Mountain West Conference head coaches and selected media, the BYU Cougars and Utah Utes were chosen as the co-favorites to win the 2006 MWC regular season titles. The Wyoming Cowgirls were picked to finish fifth.

In 2005, the Cowgirls were picked sixth, and finished with a 12-16 mark overall and 7-9 in the Mountain West Conference. They return five starters and eight letterwinners including 2005 All-Conference selection Rachel Smith.

The Cougars, who finished 14-2 in the league and 25-4 overall, and Utes, who went 23-9 overall and 11-5 in the MWC, both collected six first place votes and 116 total points. Colorado State topped UNLV for third place as the Rams totaled 101 points, while the Rebels had 83 points. Colorado State tallied two first place votes. San Diego State and Wyoming tallied 59 points each to tie for fifth place, followed by New Mexico (seventh), TCU (eighth) and Air Force (ninth).

Third year head coach Pat Stangle and the University of Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team will open up the 2006 volleyball season on the road, Friday and Saturday, August 25-26, as they face North Texas, Texas Pan AM and the host school Texas State at the CenturyTel/Honda Classic Premier in San Marcos, Texas. Mountain West Conference play will kick off, Thursday, Sept. 14 and 16 on the road against New Mexico and TCU.
