Fourth year head coach Carrie Yerty and the University of Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team will open up with their first practice of the 2011 pre-season on Tuesday, August 9 beginning at 8:30 a.m., in the UniWyo Sports Complex.
Yerty welcomes back two starters and nine letterwinners to this year's squad that finished 22-10 overall and 7-9 in the Mountain West a year ago. The squad consists of one senior, three juniors, five sophomores, one redshirt freshman and four true freshmen.
"I am really excited to get in the gym and to get the 2011 preseason started," said head coach Carrie Yerty. "Our team and staff have been preparing all year and anticipate a great season. The team is healthy, in great shape and fired up to bring our fans another exciting year of Wyoming Volleyball. We look forward to welcoming our newest staff member Vilis Ozols and our incoming freshmen to the Cowgirl family."
The Cowgirls' first practice will be from 8:30-10:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Regular weekday practices during the pre-season will rotate on a three, two or one per day schedule. All practices are open. For regular practice times or to set up interviews during the season, please contact Amy Dambro.
The Cowgirls will open pre-season play with their first two out of three weekends at home. They will host the UniWyo Wyoming Invite with matches against Gonzaga and Oregon State, on Friday, August 26, followed by DePaul and South Dakota, on Saturday, August 27.
Out on the road for the first time in 2011, they will travel to Iowa for the Drake University Invitational with matches against Drake, IPFW and Milwaukee, Friday-Saturday, Sept. 2-3. That will be followed by the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic, Sept. 9-10, with Georgia State, Idaho State and Illinois State coming to Laramie.
Things get wrapped up Friday-Saturday, Sept. 16-17 at the College of Charleston Invitational. Wyoming will play UNC-Wilmington and North Florida, on Friday, Sept. 16, with matches against Texas A&M Corpus Christi and College of Charleston on the following day. They will also have an exhibition match on Tues., Sept. 6, against a Slovenian Touring Team and two non-conference matches against Northern Colorado, on Wed., Oct. 5, and Colorado Christian, on Tuesday, Nov. 1, mixed in with the conference schedule.
Mountain West Conference matches will be played primarily on Thursday's and Saturday's, with one Friday match. The Cowgirls will kick off their home MWC schedule on Thursday, Sept. 22, against the league newcomer Boise State, and Sept. 24, against the Air Force Academy Falcons. Both matches will be played in the UniWyo Sports Complex. Their first road matches will be on Thurs., Sept. 29, against San Diego State and, Sat., Oct. 1, against UNLV.
