LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Second-year head coach Chad Callihan and the Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team will open up their first practice of the 2014 preseason on Saturday, Aug. 9 at 8:15 a.m., in the UniWyo Sports Complex.
"I think our entire program is excited to get back on the court together," Callihan said. "Everyone is more comfortable having a year together and I think that will allow us to do some things this preseason that we just didn't have time for last year. We have several newcomers who are getting acclimated and I think our success will depend heavily on them learning our systems. Our program is in a better place than we were a year ago and that is exciting."
The Cowgirls' first practice will be from 8:15-10:15 a.m. on Saturday morning. Regular weekday practices during the preseason will rotate on a one or two per day schedule. For regular practice times or to set up interviews during the season, please contact Amy Dambro or Nick Seeman.
Callihan welcomes back four starters and nine letterwinners to this year's squad that finished 21-13 overall and 11-9 in the Mountain West a year ago. Of those returning players, senior Erin Kirby will be the top honors candidate for Wyoming. Kirby was selected All-Mountain West for the third year in a row after leading the Cowgirls and the league in blocks. She also finished the year ranked second overall in the country in that same category. In all, the squad consists of two seniors, four juniors, four sophomores and seven redshirt freshmen and true freshmen.
The Cowgirls open preseason play on the road at the Montana Invite, Friday-Saturday, Aug. 29-30, in Missoula. They will host the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic, Sept. 5-6, with competition against Ball State, Montana and South Alabama. That will be followed by the UniWyo Wyoming Invite, on Friday-Saturday, Sept. 12-13, against Furman, Gonzaga and Weber State.
Mountain West matches will be played primarily on Thursday's and Saturday's while the marquee match-up against the Colorado State Rams will be Tuesday, Oct. 7 and Wednesday, Nov. 26. The Cowgirls will begin the conference schedule on the road Thursday, Sept. 25, against the Boise State Broncos. Their first home matches will be on Thursday, Oct. 2, against San Diego State and, Saturday, October 4, against UNLV.
