LARAMIE, Wyo. -
First year head coach Chad Callihan and Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team will open up with their first practice of the 2013 preseason on Saturday, August 10 beginning at 8:45 a.m., in the UniWyo Sports Complex.
"I speak for the entire staff when I say how excited we are to begin a new era of Cowgirl volleyball," said Callihan. "The team seems eager to get on the court and it will be fun getting to know their strengths and weaknesses. Preseason is always a critical time for any team but it takes on more importance when there is a new staff in place. We have three weeks to implement our system and tailor it to the strengths of the team. There is going to be a learning curve for everyone but hopefully we can hit the ground running and get acclimated quickly."
The Cowgirls' first practice will be from 8:45-10:15 a.m. on Saturday morning. Regular weekday practices during the preseason will rotate on a one or two per day schedule. For regular practice times or to set up interviews during the season, please contact Amy Dambro.
Callihan welcomes back four starters and eight letterwinners to this year's squad that finished 21-11 overall and 8-8 in the Mountain West a year ago. Two of those returning players received 2012 All-Mountain West honors, Erin Kirby and Becky Stewart. Kirby was selected for the second year in a row after leading the Cowgirls and the league in blocks. She also finished the year ranked third overall in the country in that same category. Stewart was a first time honoree after a solid junior campaign at the libero position. She led the team and was second in Mountain West matches in digs a year ago. In all, the squad consists of four seniors, two juniors, three sophomores, two redshirt freshmen and five true freshmen.
The Cowgirls will open preseason play with their first weekend at home. They will host the UniWyo Wyoming Invite, Fri.-Sat., August 30-31, with competition against Drake, Idaho, Montana State and Stetson. That will be followed by the month of September on the road and not returning to the UniWyo Sports Complex until Tuesday, Oct. 1.
Out on the road for the first time in 2013, they will travel to Virginia for the James Madison Classic with matches against CSU Bakersfield, James Madison and Presbyterian College. That will be followed by three matches at the Hoosier Classic in Bloomington, Ind. They will play Indiana, UAB and Tennessee State. Things get wrapped up Sept. 20 at the Air Force Classic. They will play Utah Valley and UC Riverside. They will also have a non-conference match against Black Hills State, on Tuesday, Oct. 1, mixed in with the conference schedule.
Mountain West matches will be played primarily on Thursday's and Saturday's with Tuesday and Wednesday matches against Colorado State. The Cowgirls will begin the conference schedule on the road Wednesday, September 18, against the Rams in Fort Collins. Their first home matches will be on Thurs., October 10, against Boise State and, Sat., October 12, against league newcomer Utah State.
