LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Second head coach Chad Callihan and the Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team concluded the preseason with their Brown and Gold scrimmage Friday evening at the UniWyo Sports Complex. The Brown Team edged out the Gold Team in four sets (27-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-14) in the Cowgirls' final tune-up for the regular season opener next week.
"This was a good opportunity for the players to get out in an environment other than practice," Callihan said. "It was nice to have some fans in the stands, music playing and it had a match like feel. I think some of the players had pre-match jitters and others got the adrenaline pumping. It was nice for them to get the experience and work through it. Overall, it was a good night for us."
The Brown team was led by newcomer Dani Root who recorded 13 kills and recorded four total blocks. Junior Bridget Shanahan and sophomore Laura Beach each added 11 kills each, while Beach hit .333 (11-3-24) on the night. True freshman Dani Westfall had a solid outing at the setter spot with 41 assists.
Senior middle blocker Erin Kirby paced the Gold squad with 16 kills and three blocks, while Kayla Slofkiss chipped in 15. Setter Courtney Chacon also finished 41 assists and Lily Austin recorded 12 digs.
The Cowgirls will open non-conference play next weekend on the road at the Montana Invite, Friday-Saturday, Aug. 29-30. They will open up against the Washington State Cougars followed by matches with Cal Poly and Montana.
