Wyoming Volleyball To Open Up Regular Season Play Friday Night

Aug. 24, 2007

Fourth year head coach Pat Stangle and the Wyoming volleyball team will open up the 2007 season this weekend on the road with two single non-conference match-ups. They will start things off on Friday, August 24, against the Utah Valley Wolverines in Orem, Utah. Then UW will take on the Weber State Wildcats the following night in Ogden, Utah. Both matches are set to begin at 7:00 p.m.

"It's always nice to finally get out and play someone different," said Stangle. "We have been battling hard in practice, and we are anxious to face our upcoming opponents in Utah Valley and Weber State."

The Cowgirls return four starters and seven letterwinners to a squad that finished 13-15 overall and 7-9 in the Mountain West Conference a year ago, including senior Rachel Smith. Last year Smith averaged a team leading 3.79 kills and 4.23 points per game, while adding 204 digs and 18 service aces. Also back for the Cowgirls are returning starters Angie Hellbaum, Lauren Scott and Tasha Weishahn, plus Samantha Eley, Carissa Lee and Jessica Kagarise. Wyoming welcomes five newcomers to the team as well.

The Cowgirls will open up the non-conference season against the Utah Valley Wolverines. This will be the first match for UVU as well. They are led by Jessica Endres who averaged 3.54 kills and hit .345 a year ago. The Wolverines return two starters and six letterwinners to a squad that went 17-11 overall last season. This is the second meeting between the two teams. USU leads the series 1-0. The last time the two teams met was October 14, 2005 as the Wolverines defeated the Cowgirls 3-2 in Laramie. Utah Valley is coached by Sam Atoa, who is in his ninth season with the program.

Wyoming will wrap up the weekend with a match against the Weber State Wildcats. This will be the opening match of the season for Weber State. They are led by Kolbie Murphey who averaged 2.86 kills and .89 blocks last season. They return all six starters and seven letterwinners to a squad that went 9-24 overall and 5-11 in the Big Sky Conference a year ago. This is the 20th meeting between the two teams. Wyoming leads the series 13-6 and has won the last three meetings. The last time the two teams met was September 6, 2003 as the Cowgirls defeated the Wildcats 3-2 in Laramie. Weber State is coached by Al Givens, who is in his 15th season with the program.
