Third year head coach Pat Stangle and the Wyoming volleyball team will open up the 2006 season this weekend at the CenturyTel/Honda Premier Classic in San Marcos, Texas. They will start things off on Friday, August 25, against the North Texas Mean Green at 9:00 a.m. and the Texas State Bobcats at 4:00 p.m. They close out the weekend on Saturday, August 26, with a match against Texas Pan American Broncs at 3:30 p.m. All match times listed are Mountain Time.
The Cowgirls return five starters and eight letterwinners to a squad that finished 12-16 overall and 7-9 in the Mountain West Conference a year ago, including 2005 All-MWC honoree Rachel Smith. Smith averaged a team leading 3.94 kills, while adding 2.37 digs and .30 service aces per game. UW also welcomes seven newcomers to the team, one transfer and six freshmen.
The Cowgirls begin their non-conference season against the North Texas Mean Green, Friday at the CenturyTel/Classic Honda Premier Tournament in San Marcos, Texas. This is the opening match for UNT as well. They return six starters and ten letterwinners to a squad that went 14-18 overall and 8-5 in the Sun Belt Conference a year ago. This is the second meeting between the two teams. Wyoming leads the series 1-0. The last time the two teams met was Sept. 9, 2005 in Denton, Texas. North Texas is coached by Cassie Headrick, who is in her sixth season with the program.
The Cowgirls will also take on the host school Texas State Bobcats, on Friday at 4:00 p.m. MT. Texas State will play Texas Pan AM before taking on the Cowgirls. They return four starters and 13 letterwinners to a squad that went 17-15 overall and 12-6 in the Southland Conference a year ago, while earning a trip the 2005 NCAA Tournament. This is the first meeting ever between the two teams. Texas State is coached by Karen Chisum who is in her 27th season with the program.
Wyoming will wrap up the tournament with a match against the Texas Pan American Broncs, on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. MT. The Broncs have three matches before playing the Cowgirls. They return four starters and eight letterwinners to a squad that went 10-19 overall a year ago. This is the second meeting between the two teams. Wyoming leads the series 1-0. The last time the two teams met was Sept. 21, 2002 as the Cowgirls won the match 3-1. UTPA is coached by Dave Thorn, who is in his ninth season with the team.
Wyoming will open up at home on Friday, Sept. 1 as they host the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic in Laramie. They will face Southern Illinois and Birmingham Southern on Friday, and then take on the New Orleans Privateers, on Saturday. The Southern Illinois match will begin at 11:00 a.m., while the other two matches are set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
