Second year head coach Carrie Yerty and the Wyoming volleyball team will open up the 2009 season this weekend at home as they host the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic, Friday-Saturday, August 28-29.
They will start things off on Friday, August 28, against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at 10 a.m. and the South Dakota State Jackrabbits at 7 p.m. They will take on the Idaho State Bengals the following night at 7 p.m. to close out the weekend.

The Cowgirls return three starters and four letterwinners to a squad that finished 5-20 overall and 4-12 in the Mountain West Conference a year ago, including junior outside hitter Dani Bedore. She averaged a team leading 3.06 kills, 3.57 points and .19 service aces per game. Also back for the Cowgirls are returning starters JennaRae Jester and Lauren Whitney, plus senior Jessica Kagarise and redshirt freshman Nikky Sapp. Wyoming welcomes nine newcomers to the team as well.
The Cowgirls will start things off against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, on Friday morning, as they host the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic. This will be the first match of the season for the Scarlet Knights as well. They are led by Caitlin Saxton who averaged 2.71 kills per set last season. Rutgers returns five starters and 12 letterwinners on a team that went 2-22 overall and 1-13 in the Big East Conference a year ago. This is the first ever meeting between the two teams. Rutgers is coached by Jeff Werneke who is in his second season with the program.
In their second match of the weekend, the Cowgirls will play the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, on Friday, August 28. They will play Idaho State before taking on the Cowgirls. They are led by Ellyce Youngren who averaged 2.56 kills and almost one block per set a year ago. They return two starters and nine letterwinners to a team that went 10-17 and 8-8 in the Summit League a year ago. This is the second meeting between the two schools. Wyoming has won the only meeting which was October 12, 2004. The Cowgirls earned a 3-2 victory. South Dakota State is coached by Nana Allison-Brewer who is in her second year.
Wyoming will close out the weekend against the Idaho State Bengals, on Saturday night. The Cougars will play Rutgers and South Dakota State before taking on the Cowgirls. They are led by Emily Waldron who averaged 2.55 kills and 2.73 digs per set last season. ISU returns four starters and nine letterwinners to a team that went 10-20 overall and 5-11 in the Big Sky Conference a year ago. This is the 16th meeting between the two teams. Wyoming leads the series 14-1. The last time the two teams met was September 16, 2004 as the Cowgirls defeated Idaho State 3-1. ISU is coached by Chad Teichert who is in his second season with the program.
