The Wyoming volleyball team will open up the 2005 home season by hosting the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic beginning on Thursday, Sept. 1, in the UniWyo Sports Complex. They will kick things off against the Boise State Broncos on Thursday night, followed by Boise State and Northern Colorado, on Friday night, Sept. 2. The tournament will wrap up on Saturday, Sept. 3 as the Cowgirls will do battle against the Northern Colorado Bears. All three matches are set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
Wyoming enters the week with a .500 (1-1) record after they split against Gardner-Webb and Montana State at the UW Husky Challenge. The Cowgirls are currently led by sophomore outside hitter Rachel Smith, who is averaging 3.62 kills and 2.75 digs per game. She is followed closely by Andrea Seele who is hitting .364 (23-7-44) on the year while adding 2.88 kills per game. As a team, they are averaging 14.25 kills, 14 digs and hitting .267 (114-39-281) overall.
This is the opening match of the 2005 season for the Boise State Broncos. They welcome back four starters and seven letterwinners from a team that went 17-12 overall and 6-7 in the WAC last season. One of their top returning players is Jamie Claussen, who averaged 2.85 kills and three digs last year.
This is tenth meeting between the two teams. Wyoming leads the series 6-3. The last time the two teams met was Nov. 9, 2003 with the Broncos coming out on top 3-1.
Northern Colorado comes in to this weekend's tournament with an overall record of 0-2 and will play Boise State before facing the Cowgirls. They return two starters and ten letterwinners to a squad that went 25-9 overall a year ago. Senior Amanda Wiggins leads the way with 2.67 kills and an impressive 4.33 digs per contest.
This is the 13th meeting between the two teams as UNC leads the series 7-6. The last time the two teams met was Sept. 7, 2004, when the Bears came out on top 3-0.
Ticket prices for single matches are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children or students without a Student I.D. All Wyoming students will be allowed free admission with their Wyoming Student I.D. You may also buy a UniWyo Classic Touranment Pass for the weekend which is $12.00 for adults and $6.00 for children.
