The University of Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team (4-0) looks to continue its winning ways this weekend hosting the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic in the UniWyo Sports Complex. Wyoming has won 11-straight matches dating back to last season, including the first four matches of this season. UW opens the tournament against South Alabama (0-3) on Friday at noon. The Cowgirls wrap up the first day of play against Ball State (2-1) at 7 p.m. UW and Montana (0-3) will clash in a rematch from last weekend in the tournament finale at noon on Saturday. Tournament action begins at 10 a.m. both days.
UW won all four contests at the Cowgirls' only home tournament in 2013. The Cowgirls are 25-9 in home openers dating back to the 1978 season. Wyoming defeated Stetson in the home opener last season for head coach Callihan's first win as the leader of the program.
Wyoming went 4-0 last week after winning the Montana Invite and downing Utah Valley in a non-conference match in Evanston, Wyo. The Cowgirls dropped only one set during the four contests. UW's 11-match winning streak is tied for the second longest in school history.
The Cowgirls lead the Mountain West in every major offensive category. Wyoming is hitting an impressive .346 (197-54-413) as a team and averaging 15.15 kills per frame. Sophomore Laura Beach leads the MW in hitting percentage at .660 with junior Bridget Shanahan leading the league in kills at 4.23 per frame. Wyoming also leads the conference in assists at 14.15. Sophomore Courtney Chacon leads the conference in assists at 12.62 per set.
The Jaguars head into this weekend with an 0-3 overall record after competing at the Asics Classic in Malibu, Calif. South Alabama was swept by Pepperdine and fell in four sets to Oral Roberts and Nevada. USA is hitting .146 (129-74-377) as a team averaging 11.73 kills per set on the season. Defensively, the Jaguars average 13.91 digs per frame with 153. South Alabama averages 1.86 blocks per stanza with 20.5 in three contests. Sophomore Jessica Lewis leads the team in kills, averaging three per set. She also adds 0.55 blocks per frame. Redshirt sophomore Nikki Gittens adds 2.36 kills per set with a team high hitting percentage of .320. Redshirt senior Jenna Hassell leads the team in digs averaging 4.91 per frame.
The Cardinals head into the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic with a 2-1 record after opening the season with a home tournament. Ball State swept Western Illinois in the season opener and followed that up with a four-set loss to Eastern Illinois and a sweep of Northern Colorado. The Cardinals are hitting .171 (125-63-363) as a team averaging 12.50 kills per stanza. Defensively, the Cardinals average 15.10 digs per frame with 151 on the season. At the net Ball State adds 2.85 blocks per frame with 28.5. Senior Kelly Hopkins leads the Cardinals offensive charge averaging 3.30 kills per set. She also leads the team in hitting percentage at .371. Junior Jenna Spadafora is dishing out 9.20 assists per frame and ranks second on the team in blocks at 1.10 per frame. Defensively, Junior Kati Vasalakis leads the team in digs averaging 4.30 per set.
The Grizzlies went 0-3 last weekend at the Montana Invite. Montana fell in four sets to Cal Poly and was swept by Washington State and the Cowgirls last Saturday. The Griz are hitting .188 (96-41-292) as a team. Defensively, Montana averages 10.30 digs per set with 103 on the season. The Griz have been impressive at the net averaging 2.30 blocks per set through the first three contests. Sophomore Michelle Robinson leads Montana in kills so far this season averaging 2.20 per set. Redshirt senior Natalie Jones adds 1.40 kills per set and adds a team high 0.90 blocks per frame. Freshman Taylor Schile leads Montana in digs averaging two per set with 20 on the season.
