Wyoming Volleyball Set to Play in Hilton Las Cruces Classic

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The Wyoming volleyball team will play in their final tournament of the non-conference season this weekend at the Hilton Las Cruces Classic in Las Cruces, N.M. They will kick things off on Thursday night, Sept. 7, against the host school New Mexico State Aggies, at 7:00 p.m. followed by the University of San Diego Toreros, at 1:00 p.m., on Friday afternoon, Sept. 8. The Cowgirls will close things out against Akron Zips, on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 9:00 a.m.

Wyoming enters the week with a 5-1 (.833) record after a three match sweep over Birmingham Southern, New Orleans and Southern Illinois last weekend in the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic. The Cowgirls are currently led by junior outside hitter Rachel Smith, who is averaging 4.86 kills, which also leads the MWC, and 2.14 digs per game. She is followed closely by freshman Annie Meyers who is averaging four kills and 3.27 digs on the year. As a team, they are averaging 15.95 kills, 17.14 digs and a .257 (351-118-905) hitting percentage.

UW will open up against the New Mexico State Aggies who are currently 6-0 on the season. They are led by Alice Borden, who is averaging 3.90 kpg and 2.38 dpg. The Aggies return six starters and 11 letterwinners to a squad that went 20-7 overall and 11-5 in the Western Athletic Conference a year ago. This is the 26th meeting between the two teams. NMSU leads the series 13-12. The last time the two teams met was Sept. 17, 2005 in Laramie as the Aggies won the match 3-0. New Mexico State is coached by Mike Jordan who is in his ninth year.

In the second match of the tournament, Wyoming will face the San Diego Toreros, on Friday, at 1:00 p.m. They are currently 5-2 overall. USD is led by Kristen Carlson who is averaging 4.32 kills and 2.59 digs per game. They return four starters and 11 letterwinners to a squad that went 23-6 overall and 10-4 in the West Coast Conference a year ago. This is the second meeting ever between the two teams. USD leads 1-0. The last time the two teams met was Sept. 21, 2001 as the Toreros defeated the Cowgirls 3-1. USD is currently coached by interim head coach Brent Hilliard.

Wyoming will wrap up the tournament with a match against the Akron Zips, on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 9:00 a.m. Akron is currently 3-3 overall and will play two matches before playing the Cowgirls. They return three starters and nine letterwinners to a squad that went 10-20 overall and 4-12 in the Mid-American Conference. This is the first meeting ever between the two schools. Akron is coached by Mike Sweitzer who is in his 16th season.
