The Wyoming Volleyball team returns home this week as they host the Nova KBM team in an exhibition match followed by the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic. They will play Tuesday, Sept. 6, against Nova KBM beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Cowgirls will then take on the Illinois State Redbirds and Georgia State Panthers, on Friday, Sept. 9, in the opening round of the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic. The following day they will close it out against the Idaho State Bengals at 1:00 p.m. The matches can be followed on www.wyomingathletics.com.
Wyoming enters the week with a 4-3 (.571) record overall after going 1-2 overall at the Drake Invitational this past weekend. The Cowgirls are currently led by junior outside hitter Jodi Purdy who is averaging 2.88 kills and 3.21 digs per set. She ranks fifth in points and eighth in blocks and service aces in the league. She is followed by redshirt freshman Erin Kirby who is adding 2.25 kills and 1.29 blocks, while hitting a team high .400 (54-10-110). As a team, they are averaging 12.38 kills, 11.17 digs and 2.81 blocks per set.
The Cowgirls will play Illinois State Redbirds in the opening match of the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic. Illinois State is 5-2 overall and will play Western Illinois before facing the Cowgirls. They are led by Shannon McGlaughlin who is averaging a team high four kills, plus 2.77 digs per set. ISU returns five starters and ten letterwinners on a team that went 19-14 overall and 8-10 in the Missouri Valley Conference a year ago. This is the seventh meeting between the two teams. Illinois State leads the series 5-1. The last time the two teams met was Sept. 4, 1998 as the Redbirds defeated the Cowgirls 3-0. Illinois State is coached by Melissa Myers who is in her fourth season with the program.
In their second match of the weekend, Wyoming will play the Georgia State Panthers, on Friday night. GSU is 4-3 overall on the year. They are led by Muki Kangwa who is averaging 4.74 kills and 2.43 digs per set. They return four starters and eight letterwinners to a team that went 14-14 overall and 8-6 in the Colonial Athletic Association a year ago. This is the first ever meeting between the two schools. Georgia State is coached by Tami Audia who is in her second season with the Panthers.
The Cowgirls will close out the weekend against the Idaho State Bengals. The Bengals are 2-5 this season and will play Georgia State and Illinois State before taking on the Cowgirls. They are led by Danielle Downs who is averaging 3.17 kills and 1.96 kills per set. ISU returns two starters and six letterwinners to a team that went 18-13 overall and 9-7 in the Big Sky Conference a year ago. This is the 17th meeting between the two schools. Wyoming leads the series 14-2. The last time the two teams met Idaho State defeated the Cowgirls, 3-1. The Bengals are coached by Chad Teichert who is in his fourth year with the program.
