The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team will be back in action at home this weekend as they host the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic. They will start things off on Friday, September 10, against the Portland Pilots at 11:00 a.m. and the UT-Arlington Mavericks at 7:00 p.m. They will take on the Northern Colorado Bears the following day at 1:30 p.m. and the Boise State Broncos, at 7:00 p.m., to close out the weekend.
Wyoming enters the week with a perfect 8-0 (1.00) record overall after winning the Clarion Invitational in DeLand, Fla. last time out. The Cowgirls are currently led by sophomore Jodi Purdy who is averaging 2.96, which is tenth in the league, two digs and 3.94 points per set. She is followed by Lauren Whitney who is adding 2.88 kills and 1.85 digs while JennaRae Jester is averaging a team high 1.38 blocks. As a team, they are averaging 13.74 kills, 12.56 digs and 2.59 blocks per set.
Wyoming will return home to host the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic and open up against the Portland Pilots. The Pilots are currently 4-2 this season. They are led by Ariel Usher who is averaging 3.42 kills and 2.58 digs per set. As a team, they are averaging 13.83 kills and hitting .188 (332-168-874). Portland returns two starters and eight letterwinners on a team that went 6-23 overall and 2-12 in the West Coast Conference a year ago. This is the fourth meeting between the two schools. Portland leads the series 2-1. The last time the two teams met was August 31, 2007 as the Pilots defeated the Cowgirls 3-2. Portland is coached by Joe Houck who is in his third season with the program and his 11th overall.
In their second match of the weekend, the Cowgirls will play the UT-Arlington Mavericks, on Friday, Sept. 10, at 7:00 p.m. UT-Arlington is currently 3-4 overall. They are led by Eld-hah Kaswatuka who is averaging 3.04 kills and 2.04 digs per set. She is followed by Tara Frantz who is adding 2.76 kills per set. They return all six starters and ten letterwinners to a team that went 12-17 overall and 8-8 in the Southland Conference a year ago. This is eighth meeting between the two schools. Wyoming leads the series 4-3. The last time the two teams met was Sept. 7, 2001 as the Cowgirls defeated the Mavericks 3-1 in Laramie. UT-Arlington is coached by Diane Seymour who is in her seventh season.
In their first match on Saturday, the Cowgirls will take on the Northern Colorado Bears. UNC, who is 7-2 overall, is led by Kelley Arnold who is averaging 3.92 kills and 1.97 digs per set. The Bears are averaging 13.97 kills and 13.62 digs per set as a team. Northern Colorado returns three starters and nine letterwinners to a team that went 21-12 overall and 12-4 in the Big Sky Conference a year ago. This is the 17th meeting between the two teams. UNC leads the series 9-7. The last time the two teams met was Oct. 9, 2007 as the Cowgirls defeated the Bears 3-0 in Laramie. Northern Colorado is coached by Lyndsey Benson who is in her sixth season with the program.
Wyoming will close out the weekend against the Boise State Broncos, on Saturday night, at 7:00 p.m. Boise State is currently 5-2 overall and will play a match on Wednesday night before coming to the tournament. They are led by Alisha Young who is averaging 3.92 kills and one block per set. The Broncos return six starters and nine letterwinners to a team that went 8-22 overall and 7-9 in the Western Athletic Conference a year ago. This is the 11th meeting between the two schools. Wyoming leads the series 7-3. The last time the two teams met was Sept. 1, 2005 as Wyoming defeated the Broncos 3-0 in Laramie. Boise State is coached by Shawn Garus who is in his two season and his tenth overall.
