LARAMIE, Wyo. (Sept. 10, 2014) - The University of Wyoming women's volleyball team looks to continue its historic roll this weekend at the UniWyo Wyoming Invite. The Cowgirls have won a school record 14 consecutive matches dating back to last season. Wyoming has also won 18-consecutive non-conference home matches dating back to 2012. UW opens up the tournament against Gonzaga on Friday at 7 p.m. UW will also face Weber State on Saturday at noon and wrap up play Saturday at 7 p.m. against Furman.
The Cowgirls head into the weekend as one of the hottest teams in the nation offensively. UW ranks seventh in the nation in hitting percentage and 13th in kills, as well as leading the Mountain West in both categories. Sophomore Laura Beach leads the nation in hitting percentage at .585. Fellow sophomore Courtney Chacon ranks seventh nationally in assists at 12 per set.
Junior outside hitter Bridget Shanahan was named the Mountain West Volleyball Player of the Week for matches played from Sept. 1-7. It's the second time in her career she has taken home the award. She last earned the honor on Nov. 25, 2013. Shanahan, a 6-2 junior from Hartland, N.Y. led the Cowgirls to the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic title over the weekend and a 3-0 victory over Utah Valley in Evanston earlier in the week. She has helped the Cowgirls remain undefeated this season with a 7-0 mark and run their consecutive winning streak to 14 matches dating back to last season. Shanahan averaged 3.85 kills, 0.54 blocks and 0.46 digs while hitting .354 over the four-match week. Against Utah Valley, she recorded 10 kills and two blocks while hitting .500 and followed that up with a 4.00 kill and .326 hitting performance in the tournament. Shanahan was also named the Most Valuable Player of the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic.
The Cowgirls played in front of an impressive crowd of 1,135 last Friday night against Ball State. It was the largest crowd in the UniWyo Sports Complex since 2003 when 1,389 fans watched the Cowgirls' match against Colorado State.
About Gonzaga: The Bulldogs head into Friday night's match against the Cowgirls with an impressive 5-1 record. The Zags defeated Grand Canyon in four sets and swept Canisus and Montana at the Gonzaga Invitational last weekend. Gonzaga's lone loss came earlier this season at the hands of No.5 Washington. The Bulldogs head into the weekend ranking eighth in the NCAA in hitting percentage at .309. The Zags also rank eighth in the nation in kills at 14.78 per frame. Gonzaga ranks fifth in the nation in assists at 14.04 per stanza. Gonzaga is led by redshirt junior Savannah Blinn, who ranks 42nd nationally in kills per set at 4.17. Junior Jordan Gasser is second on the team in kills averaging 3.57 per frame. Redshirt sophomore Paige Folger leads the defensive charge for the Zags averaging 1.17 blocks per set.
About Weber State: The Wildcats head into the UniWyo Wyoming Invite with a 2-5 overall record. Weber State competed at Air Force last weekend, dropping three matches. WSU fell to Houtson Baptist in five sets, Marist in three sets and Air Force in four sets. The Wildcats are hitting .188 (358-195-869) as a team on the season. The Wildcats are averaging 12.79 kills per set. Defensively, Weber State averages 10.21 digs per set and 2.34 blocks per frame. Senior Audrey Biggs leads the team in kills at 4.41 per set ranking 23rd in the nation. She has 119 on the season. Redshirt freshman Taylor Christensen leads the team in assists at 9.89 per set. Defensively, McKay Tarbox leads the team in digs averaging 3.36 digs per set. Junior Audrey Hunter is the Wildcats' leader in blocks averaging 1.04 per frame.
About Furman: The Paladins head into the weekend sporting a 4-3 overall record. Furman was in action on Tuesday night defeating Gardner-Webb in five sets. Last weekend, the Paladins picked up impressive five-set wins over Clemson and South Carolina. Furman is hitting .210 (395-165-1096) as a team this season. They average 12.3 kills per set. Defensively, the Paladins average an impressive 14.8 digs per set and 2.1 blocks per frame. Sophomore middle blocker Ashton Gregory leads the team in kills 3.06 per set, as she has recorded 98 on the season. Junior Amelia Bohlander leads the team in hitting percentage at .316. Freshman libero Meg DeMaar leads the Paladins in digs averaging 4.78 per frame.
