The Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team will begin their 2008 home season by hosting the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 12-13, in the UniWyo Sports Complex. They will kick things off against the Kansas Jayhawks on Friday morning at 10 a.m. followed by UAB on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. The tournament will wrap up on Saturday, Sept. 13 as the Cowgirls will do battle against the Cleveland State Vikings, at 7:30 p.m.
Wyoming enters the week with an 0-6 record overall after playing two road tournaments so far this season. The Cowgirls are currently led by outside hitter Dani Bedore who is averaging 2.45 kills and 1.27 per set. She is followed Lauren Whitney who is adding 2.27 kills and almost one dig per set. As a team, they are averaging 9.86 kills and 11.73 digs per set.
UW will open up the tournament against KU on Friday morning. The Jayhawks are 4-2 overall this season. They are led by Karina Garlington who is averaging 3.95 kills and 1.60 digs per set. Kansas returns six starters and 11 letterwinners on a team that went 13-17 overall and 6-14 in the Big 12 Conference a year ago. This is the fourth meeting between the two teams. Kansas leads the series 2-1. The last time the two teams met was Sept. 7, 2007 as the Jayhawks defeated the Cowgirls 3-2 in Lawrence. Kansas is coached by Ray Bechard who is in his 11th season with the program.
In their second match of the weekend, the Cowgirls will play the UAB Blazers, on Friday night. UAB is currently 3-2 overall and will play Cleveland State before taking on the Cowgirls. UAB is led by Ivana Bozic who is averaging 3.33 kills and 3.56 digs. They return five starters and ten letterwinners to a team that went 24-10 overall and 12-4 in Conference USA a year ago. This is the first meeting ever between the two schools. UAB is coached by Kerry Messersmith who is in her third season with the program.
Wyoming will close out the weekend against the Cleveland State Vikings, on Saturday night. The Vikings are 1-5 overall and will play UAB and Kansas before taking on the Cowgirls. They are led by Beth Greulich who is averaging 2.45 kills. Cleveland State returns all five starters and ten letterwinners to a team that went 23-9 overall and 13-3 in the Horizon League a year ago. This is the first meeting ever between the two teams. Cleveland State is coached by Chuck Voss who is in his ninth season with the program.
