The Cowgirl Volleyball Team will wrap up tournament play for the 2011 season as they head to Charleston, S.C. for the Hampton Inn Invitational. Wyoming will play UNC Wilmington and North Florida, Friday, Sept. 16, before taking on Texas A&M Corpus Christi and the host school College of Charleston the following day to close out the weekend.
Wyoming enters the week with a 6-4 (.600) record overall after going 2-1 overall at their own UniWyo Cowgirl Classic this past weekend. The Cowgirls are currently led by junior outside hitter Jodi Purdy who is averaging 3.298 kills and 3.15 digs per set. She ranks first in service aces, fourth in kills, fifth in points and eighth in digs in the league. She is followed by redshirt freshman Erin Kirby who is adding 2.47 kills and 1.12 blocks, while hitting a team high .404 (84-17-166). As a team, they are averaging 12.82 kills, 11.59 digs and 2.56 blocks per set.
Wyoming will begin with their first match against the UNC Wilmington Seahawks, on Friday morning, at 10:00 a.m. MT. The Seahawks are currently 4-6 overall. They are led by Christi Laite who is averaging 3.71 kills and 1.66 digs per contest. UNCW returns three starters and ten letterwinners to a team that went 7-23 overall and 1-13 in the Colonial Athletic Association a year ago. This is the first meeting ever between the two schools. UNC Wilmington is coached by Amy Bambenek who is in her third season with the program.
In their second match of the weekend, the Cowgirls will play the North Florida Ospreys. UNF is currently 4-4 overall. They are led by Paige Pridgeon who is averaging 2.76 kills and 2.10 digs per set. They return four starters and eight letterwinners who went 7-22 overall and 4-6 in the Atlantic Sun Conference a year ago. This is the first ever meeting between the two schools. North Florida is coached by Kevin Campbell who is in her fifth season with the program.
On Saturday, Wyoming will open the day against the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders. The Islanders are 5-5 so far this season. They are led by Brianna Brink who is averaging 2.47 kills and 2.81 digs per set. TAMUCC returns four starters and nine letterwinners to a team that went 12-18 overall and 5-11 in the Southland Conference a year ago. This is the second meeting between the two schools. Wyoming leads the series 1-0. The last time the two teams met was Sept. 20, 2002 as the Cowgirls defeated the Islanders 3-0. TAMUCC is coached by Tony Graystone who is in his third season with the program and his 13th overall.
The Cowgirls will close out the weekend against the host school College of Charleston Cougars. The Cougars are 4-6 overall. They are led by Sarah Havel who is averaging 2.71 kills and 0.78 blocks per set and Elyse Chubb who is adding 2.56 kills and 0.68 blocks. CofC returns two starters and ten letterwinners to a team that went 29-6 overall and 15-1 in the Southern Conference a year ago. This is only the second meeting between the two schools. College of Charleston won the only meeting. The last time the two teams met was August 30, 2008 as the Cougars defeated Wyoming 3-1. CofC is coached by Jason Kepner who is in his fifth season with the program.
