Wyoming Volleyball Set For Long Road Trip

    The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team will continue play this week as they head out for a four-match road trip. They will start off the week against the Brown Bears, on Thursday, Sept. 17, before heading to Durham, N.H. for the Holly Young Invitational. Wyoming will play New Hampshire, Friday, Sept. 18, before taking on Arizona State and Harvard the following day to close out the weekend.

    Wyoming enters the week with a 6-3 (.667) record overall after going 2-1 last weekend at the Fiesta Bowl Classic in Flagstaff. The Cowgirls are currently led by freshman outside hitter Jodi Purdy who is averaging 3.29 kills, which is third in the league, and 2.23 digs per set. She is followed by Lauren Whitney who is adding 2.68 kills and Dani Bedore with 2.20 kills and 1.60 digs per set. As a team, they are averaging 12.50 kills, 12.14 digs and 11.86 assists per set.

    Their first opponent of the weekend will be the Brown Bears, on Thursday, Sept. 17, in Providence. They are currently 1-4 coming in to the weekend, and are led by Christina Berry who is averaging 3.17 kills and 3.39 digs per set. Brown returns six starters and 12 letterwinners on a team that went 12-14 overall and 4-10 in the Ivy League a year ago. Brown is coached by Diane Short who is in her 17th season with the program.

    In their second match of the weekend, the Cowgirls will play the New Hampshire Wildcats in the opening round of the Holly Young Invitational. UNH is currently 2-7 overall after three weekends of play and will take on Bryant University before playing the Cowgirls. They are led by Lindsay Fogarty who is averaging 2.72 kills and 0.62 blocks per set. They return six starters and 14 letterwinners to a team that went 7-21 overall and 4-8 in the America East Conference overall last year. This is the first ever meeting between the two schools. The Wildcats are coached by Jill Hirschinger who is in her 14th season with the program.

    UW's next match of the tournament will have them facing the Arizona State Sun Devils, on Saturday, Sept. 18. They are currently 7-2 overall and will play Harvard before facing the Cowgirls. The Sun Devils are led by Sarah Reaves who is averaging 4.04 kills and 2.11 digs per set. ASU returns three starters and 11 letterwinners to a team that went 13-18 overall and 4-14 in the Pac 10 Conference a year ago. This is the eighth meeting between the two teams. ASU leads the series 5-2. The last time the two teams met was September 9, 1994 as the Wyoming defeated the Sun Devils 3-2. Arizona State is coached by Jason Watson who is in his second season with the Sun Devils.

    Wyoming will close out the weekend against the Harvard Crimson, on Saturday afternoon, at 2:30 p.m. MT. They are currently 2-5 overall and will play Arizona State and New Hampshire before facing the Cowgirls. The Crimson are led by Anne Carroll Ingersoll who is averaging a team leading 2.71 kills per set. Harvard returns six starters and 12 letterwinners to a team that went 10-15 overall and 5-10 in the Ivy League a year ago. This is the first ever meeting between the two schools. Harvard is coached by Jennifer Weiss who is her 17th season with the program.
