Cowgirl Volleyball Hits the Road for Final Tournament

The University of Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team hits the road for its final tournament of the season this weekend at the Hampton Inn & Suites UNC Classic in Greeley, Colo. Wyoming will face off against UC Davis on Friday at 4:30 p.m. MT. The Cowgirls continue action at 10 a.m. MT. Saturday against Hampton in the first meeting between the two schools. UW wraps up the tournament and non-conference play against Front Range foe Northern Colorado at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

The Cowgirls won the UniWyo Wyoming Invite last weekend for their third tournament crown of the season. Wyoming saw its 14-match winning streak end last Friday night at the hands of Gonzaga. The Cowgirls finished the tournament on Saturday by sweeping Weber State and defeating Furman in four sets. Sophomore Kayla Slofkiss was named tournament MVP. She tied a season-high with 14 kills against Furman.

Wyoming senior middle blocker Erin Kirby has a chance to make history this weekend by becoming the Cowgirls’ all-time blocks leader. Kirby sits second all-time at Wyoming with 615, as she needs four more blocks to pass Melody Friehauf (1997-00). She recorded a season-high nine blocks last Saturday against Furman.

UW heads into the weekend ranking seventh in the nation in hitting percentage at .311 (492-153-1091). The Cowgirls also lead the Mountain West in the category. The Cowgirls’ middle blocker duo of Kirby and sophomore Laura Beach rank as some of the most efficient hitters in the nation. Beach ranks third in the nation in hitting percentage at .517. She also leads the MW. Kirby ranks 10th in the nation and third in the MW at .482.

About UC Davis: The Aggies head into the weekend sporting a 4-6 overall record. Last weekend, UC Davis went 1-2, falling to No. 5 Washington and UNLV in three sets. The Aggies picked up a win in the tournament finale over Seattle defeating the Red Hawks in three sets. The Aggies defeated Sacramento State in five sets on Tuesday. UC Davis is hitting .161 (421-210-1254). The Aggies are averaging 14.7 digs per set defensively. UC Davis also adds 2.1 blocks per set. Kaylin Squyres leads UC Davis in kills at 3.92 set. She also leads the team in hitting percentage. Squyres is also second on the team in digs per set at 3.14. Megan Lancaster leads the Aggie defense averaging 4.69 digs per set. Katie Quinn leads UC Davis in blocks averaging 1.03 per stanza.

About Hampton: The Lady Pirates head to Northern Colorado with a 5-5 overall record. Hampton has dropped three-straight matches. HU fell to Radford last Tuesday in five sets. Hampton hosted a tournament last weekend falling to Georgetown in four sets and Presbyterian in five sets. The Lady Pirates have one of the best offenses in the country ranking 41st in the nation in hitting percentage at .264 (552-196-1347). Hampton also ranks 25th in the nation with their 552 kills. Defensively, the Lady Pirates are averaging 13.3 digs per frame. Hampton is led by Vendula Strakova, as she leads the nation in kills at 221 and attempts at 531. She is hitting an impressive .299 on the season. Setter Kitja Megne is averaging 11.43 assists per frame to lead Hampton. Defensively, Krista Kraskura leads the team in digs at 3.08 per set.

About Northern Colorado:  The Bears come into the weekend with a 4-5 overall record. Last weekend, the Bears were swept by Long Beach State and Loyola Marymount before wrapping up the weekend with a five-set win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Bears are hitting .167 (396-202-1159) as a team. Defensively, UNC averages 13.70 digs per set. The Bears also average 2.23 blocks per set. Kendra Cunningham leads the Bears in kills averaging 2.47 per set. Brianna Strong averages 2.27 kills per set hitting a team-high .283. Strong also leads the team in blocks averaging 1.27 per frame. Audrey Landry leads the team in digs averaging 4.15 per set with 135 on the season.
