The Wyoming volleyball team will open up 2011 Mountain West play at home this week with two matches. They will face league newcomer Boise State, on Thursday, Sept. 22, followed by the Air Force Academy Falcons, on Saturday, Sept. 24. The Cowgirls enter the week with a 9-5 (.643) record overall after going 3-1 overall at Hampton Inn Invitational in Charleston, S.C. this past weekend. Tamara Kitic and Jodi Purdy were each named to the All-Tournament Team. Wyoming is currently led by Purdy who is averaging a team high 3.77 kills and 3.21 digs per set. She ranks second in service aces, kills and points and ninth in digs in the league. She is followed by redshirt freshman Erin Kirby who is adding 2.15 kills and 1.04 blocks, while hitting a team high .367 (103-24-215). Reese Plante is averaging 1.24 blocks, while Becky Stewart is adding 4.12 digs per set. As a team, they are averaging 13.46 kills, 12.15 digs and 2.36 blocks per set. They rank second in blocks and hitting percentage, while being third in kills, digs and aces.
Their first opponent of the week will be the Boise State Broncos, on Thursday, Sept. 22. The Broncos enter the week 8-4 overall and are led by Fiona Jones who is averaging 2.52 kills and 2.50 digs per set. She is followed by Liz Harden who is adding 2.87 kills and is hitting .276 (129-39-326) on the season. Boise State returns five starters and nine letterwinners to a team that went 21-12 overall and 8-8 in the Western Athletic Conference a year ago.
This is the 12th meeting between the two schools. Wyoming leads the series 7-4. The last time the two teams met was Sept. 11, 2010 as the Broncos defeated the Cowgirls, 3-0, in Laramie. Boise State is coached by Shawn Garus who is in his third season with the program and his 11th overall.
The Cowgirls continue conference action by welcoming the Air Force Academy Falcons, on Saturday. The Falcons are 3-10 overall and will play the 20th ranked Colorado State Rams before taking on the Cowgirls. They are led by Cami Richan who is averaging 2.86 kills and 1.93 digs per set. Air Force returns two starters and seven letterwinners who went 4-25 overall and 1-15 in the Mountain West a year ago.
This is 33rd meeting between the two schools. Wyoming leads the series 27-5 and has won the last 14 in a row. The last time the two teams met was Nov. 4, 2010 as the Cowgirls defeated Air Force, 3-0. The Falcons are coached by Matt McShane who is in his second year with the program.
