After a nine day lay-off, the Wyoming volleyball team returns back to MWC play as they host the Air Force Academy Falcons, on Thursday, Sept. 28, at 7:00 p.m. and then the Colorado State Rams, on Sunday, Oct. 1, at 2:00 p.m.
Wyoming enters the week with a 7-5 (.583) record and 1-1 in conference play after falling to the Denver Pioneers, 3-2, in their last outing. The Cowgirls are currently led by junior outside hitter Rachel Smith, who is averaging 4.20 kills, which is third in the MWC, and 1.89 digs per game. She is followed closely by freshman Annie Meyers who is averaging 3.70 kills and 2.94 digs on the year. As a team, they are averaging 14.28 kills, 16.00 digs and a .210 (671-272-1900) hitting percentage.
Air Force is currently 1-11 overall and 0-4 in the MWC coming in to play on Thursday. The Falcons are led by Kristina Stewart who is averaging 2.50 kills and 2.69 digs per game. They return two starters and six letterwinners to a squad that went 5-28 overall and 1-15 in the Mountain West Conference a year ago. This is the 23rd meeting between the two teams. Wyoming leads 17-5 and has won the last four meetings in a row. The last time the two teams met was Nov. 18, 2005 as the Cowgirls defeated the Falcons 3-0 in Laramie. Air Force is coached by Penny Lucas White who is in her 11th season with the program and her 16th as a head coach. Her current record stands at 74-211.
In their second match of the weekend, the Cowgirls will host the Colorado State Rams, on Sunday, Oct. 1, at 2:00 p.m. They are currently 7-6 overall and 2-2 in the MWC. CSU is led by Jamie Strauss, who is averaging 3.31 kills and 2.69 digs per game, and Mekana Barnes who is averaging 3.03 kills and .94 blocks per game. They return four starters and six letterwinners to a squad that went 21-9 overall and 12-4 in the Mountain West Conference a year ago. This is the 60th meeting between the two teams. Colorado State leads the series 41-18 and has won 16 in a row. The last time the two teams met was Oct. 28, 2005 as the Rams defeated the Cowgirls 3-0 in Laramie. CSU is coached by Tom Hilbert who is in his tenth season with the program and his 18th as a head coach. His current record at CSU stands at 248-60.
