The Wyoming volleyball team is on the road for the first time in Mountain West play this season. They will take on the San Diego State Aztecs, on Thursday, Sept. 29, followed by the UNLV Rebels, on Saturday, Oct. 1. The first match is slated for 8:00 p.m. Mountain Time while the second match will begin at 2:00 p.m. Mountain Time. Live stats and streaming can be followed on www.wyomingathletics.com.
The Cowgirls enter the week with a 10-6 (.625) record overall and a 1-1 (.500) mark in the Mountain West after splitting with Air Force and Boise State last weekend. Wyoming is currently led by Jodi Purdy who is averaging a team high 3.71 kills plus 3.12 digs per set. She ranks first in service aces, second in kills and points and ninth in digs in the league. She is followed by redshirt freshman Erin Kirby who is adding 2.18 kills and 1.18 blocks, while hitting a team high .351 (122-31-259). Reese Plante is averaging 1.08 blocks, while Becky Stewart is adding 4.14 digs per set. As a team, they are averaging 13.50 kills, 14.30 digs and 2.40 blocks per set. They rank second in blocks, kills and hitting percentage, while being fourth in aces and digs.
Wyoming will begin the week with a match-up against the San Diego State Aztecs. The Aztecs are currently 7-4 overall and 0-1 in the Mountain West. They are led by Andrea Hannasch who is averaging 2.76 kills and 1.20 blocks per set. San Diego State returns five starters and ten letterwinners to a team that went 16-16 overall and 8-8 in the Mountain West Conference a year ago.
This is the 41st meeting between the two schools. SDSU leads the series 30-10. The last time the two teams met was Oct. 28, 2010 as the Aztecs defeated the Cowgirls, 3-1, in San Diego. SDSU is coached by Deitre Collins Parker who is in her third season with the program and 16th overall.
The Cowgirls will wrap up the week against the UNLV Rebels, on Saturday, Oct. 1. The Rebels are 8-6 overall and 1-0 in the MW. They are led by Sekola Falemaka who is averaging 2.37 kills and 2.93 digs per set. UNLV returns four starters and six letterwinners who went 10-20 overall and 5-11 in the Mountain West a year ago.
This is 34th meeting between the two schools. UNLV leads the series 20-13. The last time the two teams met was Nov. 6, 2010 as the Cowgirls defeated the Rebels 3-1 in Laramie. UNLV is coached by Cindy Fredrick who is in her first year with the program.
