The Wyoming volleyball team returns home for the first time in three weeks as they host the San Diego State Aztecs, on Saturday, Oct. 2. The match is to begin at 7 p.m. in the UniWyo Sports Complex.
Wyoming enters the week with a 15-2 (.882) record overall and 1-1 in the MWC after splitting with Utah and BYU on the road. The Cowgirls are currently led by sophomore Jodi Purdy who is averaging 3.22, which is fifth in the league, 2.29 digs and 4.01 points per set. She is followed by Lauren Whitney who is adding 2.55 kills and 2.22 digs. JennaRae Jester is averaging a team high 1.48 blocks, while Jadranka Tramosljanin in adding 4.66 digs per set. As a team, they are averaging 13.76 kills, 14.08 digs and 2.86 blocks per set. They rank first in assists, aces and opponent hitting percentage, while being second in kills, hitting percentage and blocks.
The Aztecs are 7-7 overall and 2-0 in the MWC after victories over New Mexico and TCU last weekend. They will play CSU on Thursday night before taking on the Cowgirls. SDSU is led by Kyley Sexton who is averaging 3.33 kills and 2.10 digs per set. She is followed by Raegan Shelton who is adding 2.79 kills and almost one dig per set. They return four starters and seven letterwinners to a team that went 14-15 overall and 7-9 in the Mountain West Conference a year ago.
This is 39th meeting between the two schools. San Diego State leads the series 29-9. The last time the two teams met was November 5, 2009 as the Aztecs defeated the Cowgirls 3-2 in Laramie. San Diego State is coached by Deitre Collins-Parker who is in her second season with the program.
