The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team will head back out on the road once again this week for two conference match-ups. They will take on the UNLV Rebels, Thursday, Oct. 4, in Las Vegas, Nev. and the San Diego State Aztecs, on Saturday, Oct. 6, in San Diego. The UNLV match is set to begin at 8 p.m. MT while the match against the Aztecs is slated for 3 p.m. MT. Live stats from both matches can be followed on this site.
"The league is shaping up to be very competitive so far this season," said UW head coach Pat Stangle. "Both UNLV and San Diego State have been playing very well and will be tough at home. I expect this to be a good battle."
Wyoming enters the week with a 6-7 (.462) record and a 1-4 mark in Mountain West Conference play. The Cowgirls are currently led by outside hitter Rachel Smith, who is averaging 4.38 kills, which is fourth in the MWC, and 2.53 digs per game. She is followed closely by senior Angie Hellbaum who is averaging 4.25 kills and 2.34 digs, while leading way with the .261 (225-81-552) hitting percentage. As a team, they are averaging 15.08 kills, 15.47 digs and have a .219 (799-338-2108) hitting percentage.
The Rebels are currently 11-3 overall and 2-2 in the MWC. They are led by Maria Aladjova who is averaging 4.53 kills and 3.53 digs per game. She is followed by Lauren Miramontes who is adding 4.06 kills and 1.04 blocks, while Jessica Walters is averaging 2.85 kills per game. UNLV returns five starters and ten letterwinners to a squad that went 20-10 overall and 10-6 in the MWC last year. This is the 25th meeting ever between the two schools. UNLV leads the series 13-11. The last time the two teams met was November 23, 2006 as the Rebels defeated the Cowgirls 3-0. UNLV is coached by Allison Keeley who is in her fourth season with the program.
The Aztecs are currently 10-5 overall, 2-2 in the MWC and will play Air Force before facing the Cowgirls. They are led by Stephanie Darnall who is averaging 3.38 kills and 2.88 digs per game. She is followed by Lindsey Mahan who is adding 2.67 kills and 1.34 blocks per game. SDSU returns four starters and ten letterwinners to a squad that went 12-18 overall and 5-11 in the MWC a year ago. This is the 33rd meeting ever between the two schools. San Diego State leads the series 26-6. The last time the two teams met was Nov. 4, 2006 as the Cowgirls defeated the Aztecs, 3-1. San Diego State is coached by Mark Warner who is in his 13th season with the program.
