Wyoming Volleyball on the Road to San Diego and Las Vegas

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The Wyoming volleyball team will return to Mountain West Conference play on the road with two matches this week. They will take on the San Diego State Aztecs, on Thursday, Oct. 5, in San Diego and the UNLV Rebels, on Saturday, Oct. 7, in Las Vegas. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m. MT.

Wyoming enters the week with an 8-6 (.571) record and 2-2 in conference play after earning a split with Air Force and Colorado State last week. The Cowgirls are currently led by junior outside hitter Rachel Smith, who is averaging 4.11 kills, which is third in the MWC, and 1.96 digs per game. She is followed closely by freshman Annie Meyers who is averaging 3.57 kills and 2.87 digs on the year. As a team, they are averaging 14.30 kills, 15.70 digs and a .204 (772-328-2173) hitting percentage.

San Diego State is currently 6-11 overall and 0-5 in the MWC coming in to play on Thursday. They are led by Melanie Greene who is averaging 3.76 kills and 2.71 digs per game along with Audra Dent who is averaging 3.13 kills per game. They return four starters and eight letterwinners to a squad that went 16-13 overall and 8-8 in the MWC a year ago. This is the 31st meeting between the two teams. San Diego State leads the series 25-5 and holds a 7-3 record over the last ten matches. The last time the two teams met was Nov. 4, 2005 as the Cowgirls defeated the Aztecs 3-0 in Laramie. San Diego State is coached by Mark Warner who is in his 12th season with the program. His current record at SDSU stands at 183-171.

In their second match of the weekend, the Cowgirls will play the UNLV Rebels, on Saturday, Oct. 7, in Las Vegas. They are currently 12-5 overall and 3-2 in the MWC. UNLV is led by Maria Aladjova, who is averaging 3.79 kills and 2.83 digs, and Lauren Miramontes who is averaging 2.93 kills and 1.12 blocks per game. They return five starters and nine letterwinners to a squad that went 15-15 overall and 10-6 in the Mountain West Conference a year ago. This is the 22nd meeting between the two teams. UNLV leads the series 11-10 and has won seven of the last ten meetings. The last time the two teams met was Nov. 5, 2005 as the Cowgirls defeated the Rebels 3-1 in Laramie. UNLV is coached by Allison Keeley who is in her third season with the program. Her current record stands at 42-32 overall at UNLV.
