The Wyoming volleyball team will host their first home Mountain West Conference matches of the season coming up this weekend. They will welcome the Utah Utes, on Friday, Oct. 7, and then the nationally ranked BYU Cougars, on Saturday, Oct. 8. Both matches are set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
The Cowgirls come into this match with a 5-7 overall mark and a 0-3 record in the conference. They are currently led by sophomore outside hitter Rachel Smith, who is averaging 3.40 kills and 1.98 digs per game. She is followed closely by Andrea Seele who is hitting .221 (84-38-208) on the year while adding 2.05 kills per game. As a team, Wyoming is second in the conference in digs with 625 (14.53 dpg) and in service aces with 90 (2.09 sapg).
Utah enters the weekend with a 10-5 overall record and a 2-2 mark in MWC play. The Utes are led by Shelly Sommerfeldt who is averaging 3.53 kills per game and 2.82 digs per game, along with Airial Salvo who is averaging 3.11 kills and 2.35 digs per game. They return four starters and nine letterwinners to a squad that went 24-7 overall and 13-1 in the Mountain West Conference a year ago.
This is the 56th meeting between the two teams. Utah leads 32-23 and has won the last seven meetings. The last time the two teams met was Nov. 12, 2004 when the Utes defeated the Cowgirls 3-0 in Salt Lake City. Utah is coached by Beth Launiere, who is in her 16th season with the program.
The Cougars are currently 11-0 overall and 4-0 in MWC action, while being ranked 16th in the country, and will play CSU before facing the Cowgirls. They are led by Chelsea Goodman who is averaging 3.87 kills per game and 2.15 digs per game, along with Lindsy Hartsock who is averaging 3.39 kills and hitting .471 on the year. They return six starters and ten letterwinners to a squad that went 19-11 overall and 9-5 in the Mountain West Conference a year ago.
This is the 56th meeting between the two teams. BYU leads 51-4. The last time the two teams met was Nov. 13, 2004 when the Cougars defeated the Cowgirls 3-0 in Provo. BYU is coached by Jason Watson who is in his first year with the program.
As a special promotion for the Wyoming/BYU game, fans who present a Cowboy football ticket from the day's game with TCU will gain free admission to the volleyball match.
