Cowgirls Set To Finish Three-Match Road Trip

The Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team will close a three-match road trip on Thursday, Oct. 11 and Saturday, Oct. 13 against UNLV (12-6 overall, 4-1 Mountain West) and Fresno State (10-7 overall, 3-2 MW), respectively. The Cowgirls enter this weekend's matches with a 13-6 overall record and 1-3 in the MW.

"Our kids have done a great job in the gym in preparation this week," head Cowgirl volleyball coach Carrie Yerty said. "This team is very motivated and we know we have to bring our best to win on this road stretch."

The Cowgirls are coming off a difficult three-set loss to Colorado State on Friday, Oct. 5, but have an opportunity to even their conference record in this weekend's matches. As a team, the Cowgirls lead the MW in opponent hitting percentage allowing a .124 percentage. They also lead the league in blocks with 196.5 total to average 2.89 per set. Individually, senior Jodi Purdy is second in the conference in total aces with 24 to average 0.35 per set. She is also ranked in the top 10 in kills averaging 3.16, which is seventh-best in the league. Libero Becky Stewart is currently first in the conference in digs per set averaging 4.76. Cowgirls Erin Kirby and Reese Plante continue to rank in the top 10 of two categories in the conference. In blocking, Kirby is fourth averaging 1.38 per set and Plante is sixth with a 1.19 average per set. Both continue to hit .300 plus, with Kirby ranking third, averaging .333 (109-31-234), while Plante is in sixth with an average of .317 (128-36-290). Setter Rachel Keyes continues to set up the Cowgirl offense averaging 5.69 assists per set.

A look at the Rebels: UNLV boasts a league-leading 4-1 record entering this week's match with the Cowgirls. The Rebels are 12-6 overall in 2012. They are coming off their first MW loss of the season against San Diego State which snapped a six-match winning streak. Leading the Rebel attack is Daryn Glenn who is averaging 2.85 kills per set. Madeline Westman is close behind Glenn averaging 2.80 kills and a tam high 1.51 blocks. Leading the UNLV offense is Kinsey Caldwell who is averaging 10.54 assists per set. She is also averaging 2.59 digs per set. Leading the Rebel defense is Allison Davies who has 270 digs on the season to average 3.91 per set, followed by Sekola Falemaka who is averaging three per set. The Rebels lead the all-time series with the Cowgirls 20-15. The Cowgirls won the last meeting 3-1, in Laramie on Oct. 27, 2011. The Rebels are led by second-year head coach Cindy Fredrick.

A look at the Bulldogs: Fresno State is currently 10-7 overall on the season with a 3-2 record in the MW. They are 5-2 in their last seven matches dating back to Sept. 15. Leading the Bulldog attack is Marissa Brand who has 234 kills to average 3.77 per set. Megan Callahan is second on the team in kills averaging 2.92 per set. Setting up the offense is Barbara Alcantara who is averaging 11.20 assists per set. Defensively, Christina Lee leads the Bulldogs in digs with 278 on the season averaging 4.21 per set. Korrin Wild is averaging nearly three digs per set at 2.95. Leading the Fresno blocking is Maci Murdock who averages nearly one per set with a total of 60 on the season. Saturday's meeting between the Cowgirls and the Bulldogs will be the 19th in the all-time series, with UW leading 10-8. Fresno won the last meeting 3-1 on Sept. 5, 2009, in Laramie. Head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell is in her fifth year at the helm of the Bulldog program.
