The Wyoming volleyball team will welcome two ranked conference opponents this week to the UniWyo Sports Complex. They will host the 19th ranked BYU Cougars, on Thursday, Oct. 12, and the 12th ranked Utah Utes, on Saturday, Oct. 14. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be available via live streamed video on wyomingathletics.com.
Wyoming enters the week with a 8-8 (.500) record and 2-4 in Mountain West Conference play after being swept by San Diego State and UNLV on the road last week. The Cowgirls are currently led by junior outside hitter Rachel Smith, who is averaging 3.92 kills, which is fourth in the MWC, and 1.95 digs per game. She is followed closely by freshman Annie Meyers who is averaging 3.43 kills and 2.82 digs on the year. As a team, they are averaging 14.11 kills, 15.77 digs and have a .198 (861-375-2456) hitting percentage.
BYU is currently 15-2 overall and 6-1 in the MWC, while being ranked 19th in the AVCA Coaches Poll. They is led by Chelsea Goodman who is averaging 4.27 kills and 3.48 digs, while Erica Lott is also averaging 4.33 kills and 1.14 blocks per game. They return six starters and 11 letterwinners to a squad that went 25-4 overall and 14-2 in the Mountain West Conference a year ago. This is the 58th meeting between the two teams. BYU leads the series 53-4 and has won ten of the last eleven meetings. The last time the two teams met was Nov. 12, 2005 as the Cougars defeated the Cowgirls 3-0 in Provo. BYU is coached by Jason Watson who is in his second season with the program. His current record stands at 40-6.
In their second match of the weekend, the Cowgirls will play host to the 12th ranked Utah Utes. They are currently 16-2 overall and 7-0 in the MWC. Utah is led by Airial Salvo who is averaging 4.12 kills and 3.84 digs along with Kathryn Lovell who is adding 3.24 kills per game. They return five starters and eight letterwinners to a squad that went 23-9 overall and 11-5 in the Mountain West Conference a year ago. This is the 59th meeting between the two teams. Utah leads the series 35-23 and has won the last ten meetings. The last time the two teams met was Nov. 24, 2005 as the Utes defeated the Cowgirls 3-0 in Las Vegas at the MWC Tournament. Utah is coached by Beth Launiere who is in her 17th season with the program. Her current record stands at 338-189.
