After a brief homestand the Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team (12-8, 2-4 MW) hits the road for a pair of Mountain West matches. Wyoming will face preseason MW favorite San Diego State (9-7, 4-2 MW) on Thursday at 8 p.m. MT. UW wraps up the weekend at UNLV (10-6, 5-1 MW) on Saturday at 8 p.m.
The Cowgirls went 1-1 last week at the UniWyo Sports Complex. Wyoming defeated Boise State in four sets (25-17, 25-20, 26-24) on Thursday evening. On Saturday, Utah State snapped the Cowgirls' four-match winning streak and seven-match home winning streak, as the Aggies defeated UW in four sets (15-25, 23-25, 25-19, 25-27).
Wyoming junior Erin Kirby is closing in on 500 career blocks. Kirby sits at 484 in her career. She has 136 this season, as the middle blocker is averaging 1.81 per set, which leads the nation and MW. Kirby is only 30 blocks away from moving into the top-10 in all-time total blocks in Mountain West history.
San Diego State comes into Thursday's contest sporting a 9-7 overall record and a 4-2 record in the MW. SDSU was picked to win the MW in the 2013 Preseason Coaches' Poll, after being co-champions with Colorado State in 2012. Last week, the Aztecs split a pair of matches on the road falling to New Mexico in five sets and defeating Air Force in four sets. SDSU is second in the MW in kills on the season averaging 14.08 per set. Defensively, the Aztecs are second in the MW in digs at 15.21 per frame, as San Diego State has recorded 958 digs on the season in 63 sets. The Aztecs' offense is led by the duo of senior Summer Nash and junior Michelle Waber. Nash ranks fourth in the MW in kills at 3.65 per set. She also ranks second in the league in points with 4.20 per set. Waber is seventh in the conference in kills averaging 3.25 per frame.
UNLV heads into the weekend having won six of its last seven contests. The Rebels are 10-6 on the season and 5-1 in the MW, as UNLV sits second in the conference standings. The Rebels won both matches last weekend with four-set wins over Air Force and New Mexico. UNLV is third in the MW in kills averaging 13.30 per frame. Defensively, the Rebels are fourth in the league in digs at 15.8 per set. Senior Sekola Falemaka is fifth in the league in kills at 3.59 per set. She also leads the league in service aces with 0.37 per frame. Defensively, junior Allison Davies is third in the conference in digs averaging four per set.
