The University of Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team (14-10, 4-6 MW) hits the road for a pair of Mountain West matches this weekend. UW opens the trip at Utah State (14-7, 7-3 MW) on Thursday at 7 p.m. MT. in the first meeting between the teams in Logan, Utah, since 1989. The Cowgirls wrap up the brief road swing against Boise State on Saturday at 7 p.m., as UW looks for its first win against the Broncos in Boise since 1994.
UW went 1-1 in a pair of matches at the UniWyo Sports Complex last week. The Cowgirls defeated San Jose State in four sets (25-19, 25-22, 23-25, 25-13) on Thursday. Wyoming closed out the weekend with a three-set (25-12, 25-21, 25-23) loss to Fresno State on Saturday. Wyoming had an impressive match against San Jose State on Thursday, as the Cowgirls hit .307 on the night, marking the best percentage against a MW team since UW hit .351 against Air Force in 2011. UW also recorded 10 service aces against the Spartans, as it was the largest total against a MW opponent since UW recorded 11 against TCU in 2006.
Utah State heads into Thursday night’s contest with a 14-7 record and a 7-3 mark in Mountain West play. The Aggies have won five-straight matches dating back to their win in Laramie on Oct. 12. Last week, Utah State picked up wins against San Diego State in three sets and UNLV in four sets. Utah State is led by Rachel Orr, as the junior leads the team with 266 kills, averaging 3.37 per set to rank sixth in the MW. Orr also adds 2.47 digs per set and 0.61 blocks per frame defensively. Junior middle blocker Kaitlyn VanHoff is third in the conference in blocks averaging 1.29 per stanza. Libero Ashley Rogers-Court leads the Aggies and ranks third in the MW in digs averaging 4.06 per set.
The Broncos head into the weekend sporting a 10-11 overall record and a 4-7 record in the MW. Boise State has dropped four of their last six matches, including a sweep at the hands of the Cowgirls on Oct. 10. Senior Sarah Horton leads the team in kills at 2.67 per frame. Junior Alyssa Gamel adds 2.69 kills per set and adds 2.63 digs per frame. Freshman libero Hannah Hubbard ranks seventh in the MW in digs at 3.63 per set.
