Cowgirl Volleyball Heads to Fresno State for Saturday Matinee

The University of Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team (19-6 overall, 8-4 Mountain West) heads to Fresno State (6-21,1-12 MW) for a Saturday matinée matchup with the Bulldogs on Saturday at 2 p.m. MT. The Cowgirls are looking to win back-to-back road matches against the Bulldogs for the first time in school history.

The Cowgirls are also looking for their 20th win of the season. Head Coach Chad Callihan can make history with a victory Saturday, as he will join Gerry Gregory as the only Wyoming head coaches to record 20 wins in their first two seasons.

Wyoming is off to a 19-6 start to the season sporting an impressive .760 winning percentage. It is the Cowgirls’ best start through 25 matches since the 1989 team that also got off to a 19-6 start.

The Cowgirls come into the week at No. 55 in the NCAA’s RPI rankings. It is the second highest RPI ranking in the Mountain West behind No. 13 Colorado State.

About Fresno State: The Bulldogs come into the weekend with a 6-21 overall record and a 1-12 mark in the Mountain West. The Bulldogs fell to No. 10 Colorado State in three sets on Thursday night. Fresno State ranks ninth in the MW in kills per set at 12.21. The Bulldogs are hitting .167 (1197-641-3331) as a team ranking 10th in the MW. FSU ranks eighth in the league in assists dishing out 11.44 per frame. Defensively, Fresno State ranks ninth in the MW in digs at 13.10. The Bulldogs are 11th in the conference in blocks per set at 1.45. The Bulldogs are led by Junior Zana Bowens, who ranks eighth in the league in kills at 3.09 per set. Bowens ranks 11th in the MW in points per set at 3.59. Bowens is second in the conference in service aces at 0.36 per frame. Setter Jelena Jovanovic leads the Bulldogs in assists at 7.05 per frame. Defensively, sophomore Maggie Epright leads FSU and ranks eighth in the conference in digs at 3.48 per stanza. Senior Maci Murdock leads the Bulldogs in blocks at 0.72 per set.
