Wyoming Cowgirls Earn Fourth Seed In 2011 Mountain West Volleyball Tournament

The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball team will open up their first match of the 2011 MW Volleyball Tournament on Friday, Nov. 18. They will face off with the fifth seeded New Mexico Lobos for the second time in a little over a week. The match is set for 8:30 p.m. in Albuquerque and will be shown on The Mtn. Sports Network.

The Cowgirls, who finished tied for third at the end of regular season play, enter the week with a 20-10 (.643) record overall and a 9-5 (.583) mark in the Mountain West after closing out with two victories against New Mexico and TCU. Wyoming is currently led by Jodi Purdy who is averaging a team high 3.42 kills and 4.09 points plus 3.20 digs per set. She ranks third in points, fourth in kills, sixth in service aces and ninth in digs in the league. She is followed by redshirt freshman Erin Kirby who is adding 1.76 kills and 1.20 blocks, along with hitting .314 (199-57-452). Reese Plante is averaging 1.78 kills and 1.15 blocks, while Becky Stewart is leading the way with 3.79 digs per set. As a team, they are averaging 12.58 kills, 14.12 digs and 2.56 blocks per set.

The Lobos, who come into the tournament as the fifth seed, finished the regular season 14-13 overall and 6-8 in the Mountain West after a 3-2 loss against the CSU Rams last time out. They are led by Ashley Rhoades with 3.88 kills and almost one block per set. She is followed by Kelly Williamson with 3.50 kills and 1.52 digs, while libero Allison Buck is averaging 5.04 digs per set. UNM returns three starters and ten letterwinners in the Mountain West a year ago.

This is 67th meeting between the two schools. Wyoming leads the series 36-30. The last time the two teams met was Nov. 10, 2011 as the Cowgirls swept the season series with a 3-2 win over the Lobos in Albuquerque. Wyoming defeated New Mexico at home on Oct. 15, 2011, 3-0, in Laramie. UNM is coached by Jeff Nelson who is in his fifth season.
