The Wyoming volleyball team will take on the second seeded UNLV Rebels in the opening round of the Mountain West Conference Tournament on Thanksgiving Day. This is the second year in a row the two teams have met up in the tournament. Last year the Rebels beat the Cowgirls 3-0 to end UW's season.
Wyoming and UNLV will face off on Thursday, November 22, at Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas, Nev. The match is set to start at 1:30 Pacific Time, 2:30 p.m. Mountain Time, and can be seen on the Mtn. Sports Network.
The Cowgirls, who come in to the tournament as the seventh seed, finished the regular season 12-13 overall and 6-10 in the MWC. The Cowgirls are currently led by senior outside hitter Rachel Smith, who is averaging 4.63 kills, which is fourth in the MWC, and 2.43 digs per game. She is followed closely by fellow senior Angie Hellbaum who is averaging 4.19 kills, 2.46 digs and a team leading .250 (390-149-965) hitting percentage on the year. As a team, they are averaging 15.41 kills, 15.26 digs and have a .211 (1433-635-1335) hitting percentage.
The Rebels, who come in as the second seed, are currently 21-5 overall, 12-4 in the MWC and having won both matches between the two teams this season. They are led by Lauren Miramontes who is averaging 4.51 kills and 1.14 blocks per game. She is followed by Maria Aladjova who is adding 4.45 kills and 3.03 digs, while Jessica Walters is averaging 2.36 kills per game. UNLV returns five starters and ten letterwinners to a squad that went 20-10 overall and 10-6 in the MWC last year. This is the 26th meeting ever between the two schools. UNLV leads the series 15-11. The last time the two teams met was November 3, 2007 as the Rebels defeated the Cowgirls 3-1 in Laramie. UNLV is coached by Allison Keeley who is in her fourth season with the program.
