Senior outside hitter Rachel Smith of the Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team was recognized on Wednesday as the Mountain West Conference announced the 2007 All-Conference Team.
The Mountain West All-Conference Volleyball awards as selected by the league's nine head coaches were announced in conjunction with the Mountain West Conference Volleyball Championship in Las Vegas, Nev. The quarterfinal round begins tomorrow, Thursday, November 22, and runs through Saturday, November 24, at Cox Pavilion on the UNLV campus.
Colorado State junior Mekana Barnes was named Player of the Year, while New Mexico's Lisa Meeter was voted Freshman of the Year, and Colorado State's Tom Hilbert and UNLV's Allison Keeley were voted MWC Co-Coaches of the Year.
Smith is averaging a team leading 4.63 kills and 5.12 points along with 2.43 digs per game, which is fourth on the team. In conference matches, she is averaging 4.59 kills, 2.37 digs and .44 blocks per game. She is also ranked second in the league in kills (4.63 kpg) and fifth in points (5.12 ppg), while in league matches she is fourth in kills (4.59 kpg) and fifth in points (5.11 ppg). With 14 kills against Air Force (11/16/07), she moved in to first place all-time in school history with 1,538 kills. Smith has recorded double-figures in kills 23 times and digs seven times, along with seven double-doubles.
The Cowgirls open up play at the MWC Tournament Thursday, November 22, in Las Vegas. Their first-round opponent will be the UNLV Rebels, which is set to begin at 2:30 p.m. MT at the Cox Pavilion.
