Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball's senior outside hitter Jodi Purdy, sophomore middle blocker Erin Kirby and junior libero Becky Stewarthave been named to the 2012 All-Mountain West volleyball team, the conference office announced Tuesday. Purdy earned her third-consecutive honor, with Kirby earning her second in as many seasons and Stewart was selected to her first All-Conference team. The three All-MW selections mark the first time since 1998 that three Cowgirls have made an All-Conference squad.
"I am very excited to see that we had three All-Conference players," Wyoming Cowgirl head coach Carrie Yerty said. "We are all very proud and happy for Jodi, Erin and Becky. It is a true testament to all the hard work that they have put in over the course of the year. The group of players that surrounded these individuals really allowed for them to shine and excel. Our team and staff are all celebrating these honors together because our success has been a total team effort."
About Each Cowgirl:
Jodi Purdy, Senior, Outside Hitter, Winterset, Iowa: Purdy earned her third-consecutive postseason MW honor. She played and started in all 32 matches this season for the Cowgirls as well as all 117 sets. She led the Cowgirls in kills, averaging 3.44 per set, as well as leading in points with 4.21 per set. During conference matches she finished the season ranked in the top 10 of five individual categories. In league matches, she averaged 3.58 kills per set and 4.38 points per set, both of which ranked third. She finished the season with the eighth-best service ace average of 0.23 per set as well as averaging 1.08 blocks per set which was ninth in league matches. She also recorded 3.02 digs per set which ranked her 10th. She tied for the lead in the conference with 15 double-doubles, but during the season became the conference's career leader in double-doubles with 61. Purdy finished her Cowgirl career as the school record-holder in kills (1,559) and digs (1,278). She also finished second in aces with 137. In the conference, Purdy finishes her career ranked in the top 10 of four categories. She finished second in career points (1,866.5), third in attacks (4,274), fourth in kills (1,559) and seventh in aces with 137.
Erin Kirby, Sophomore, Middle Blocker, Evanston, Wyo.: Kirby was selected to her second All-MW team in as many seasons. She started and played every match this season for the Cowgirls and played in 115 sets. She finished the season ranked first in the MW in overall blocking averaging 1.77 per set. In conference matches she blocked 2.02 attacks per set. Her season-blocking average of 1.77 ranked second in the nation for the season. She was a key contributor in the Cowgirls' second-ranked team blocking that tallied 3.27 per set. Kirby finished the season with 204 total blocks which is the most in a single season in Cowgirl history. Her 348 career blocks ranks her eighth all-time in Cowgirl history. During the season she was the only Cowgirl to eclipse the .300 mark, hitting .323 (190-52-427) which placed her sixth in the conference.
Becky Stewart, Junior, Libero, Parker, Colo.: Stewart earned her first career All-MW honor. She finished the season with a school-record 540 single-season digs playing in all 117 sets for the Cowgirls. Her season average of 4.62 digs per set put her atop the conference in overall matches. In conference matches, she finished with 283 digs in 62 sets to average 4.56 per set which was No. 2 this season. She led the Cowgirls in digs in 30 of 32 matches this season. Her 540 digs in the season broke the previous Wyoming record of 435 set in 2009. She finished the season with 1,059 career digs, which is fifth all-time in Cowgirl history and became the seventh Cowgirl to reach 1,000 digs in her career.
