Two doubles teams and two individuals earned victories on the opening day of the Red and Blue Challenge on Friday in Dallas.
“We had a good day today as a team,” head coach Dean Clower said. “Our doubles are improving led by Tessa (van Der Ploeg) and Elisa (Koonik) who have really started putting things together. In singles, we are making strides as well and it was nice to see Ana get a win today.”
The duo of Elisa Koonik and Tessa Van Der Ploeg defeated Sofia Blanco and Aliona Bolsova of Oklahoma State, 6-4, while Miranda Talbert and Ana Tkachenko defeated Sarai Monarrez Yesaki and Macie Elliott of SMU, 6-3. The third doubles team of Dorottya Jonas and Milka Genkova lost 6-2 against Rebekah Anderson and Aleksandra Panchenko.
In singles play, Tkachenko beat Emily Groeneveld of Liberty, 6-2, 7-6, while Koonik defeated Elliott, 6-2, 6-4. Talbert fell to Ellie Zogg in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Jonas lost to Katarina Adamovic, 6-3, 6-0, van Der Ploeg dropped her match against Lena Ruppert, 6-3, 6-4 and Genkova was defeated by Katie Stresnakova, 6-3, 6-1.
Action will continue tomorrow morning at the Red and Blue Challenge.
