LARAMIE, Wyo. (Nov. 20, 2016) — The Wyoming women’s basketball team (3-1 overall) won its second straight game with a 35-point win, 61-26, over the Cal State Fullerton Titans (0-3 overall) on Sunday afternoon. The 26 points is the lowest point total given up by the Cowgirls since Nov. 17, 2014 when they held Western State to 29.

Four Cowgirls finished the night in double figures led by junior Liv Roberts. She recorded a game-high 14 points and seven rebounds. She was 6-of-9 from the field and 2-of-4 from beyond the arc. Junior Natalie Baker and sophomores Marta Gomez, Rachelle Tucker each added ten points. Wyoming shot 26-of-71 (.366) from the field and 7-of-26 (.269) from three. UW also out rebounded the Titans, 52-35.

“It was nice to be able to play everyone in the game tonight,” head coach Joe Legerski. “I thought we did a tremendous job today defensively right from the start and when we got in transition, we started making good plays. We need to work on finishing some layups, which would have made a difference, but what I liked is when we missed we were sprinting to follow it up. Defensively, Hailey (Ligocki) and Liv (Roberts) did a great job. They cut down corners, angles and were there on every catch. Bailee (Cotton) gave great help and Natalie (Baker) had a nice game. There are a lot of positives to take from today.”

Cal State Fullerton was led by Dhanyel Johnson and Jordan Jackson with seven points each, while Johnson recorded a team-high six boards. The Titans shot 9-of-44 (.205) from the field, but committed 19 turnovers.

The Cowgirls extended the lead through the first media timeout with a 13-2 run, making it 47-16. The scoring was even with Wyoming holding a 55-21 lead at the end of the third. Both teams went cold for the first four minutes of the fourth. A layup by China Henderson ended the scoring skid and it wasn’t until the 4:04 mark when Skyler Snodgrass hit a three for Wyoming. A combined four points was scored the remainder of the way with the Cowgirls earning the 61-26 victory.

Wyoming scored the first basket of the game, which was answered with the next five of seven to give Fullerton a 5-4 advantage. A basket by Roberts gave the Cowgirls the lead and they scored the final seven of nine to take a 13-8 advantage through the first ten minutes. Wyoming got it going offensively and solid on the defense end in the second quarter. The Cowgirls held the Titans to six quarter points and scored 18 to take a 20-point lead, 34-14, into the locker room.

Baker led all scorers in the half with eight and five rebounds off the bench. Gomez and Roberts each added seven. Wyoming shot 15-of-34 (.441) from the field and out rebounded the Titans 23-14. Cal State Fullerton was led by Jackson with four points while Iman Lathan and Jade Vega each had three rebounds.

Wyoming will wrap up its homestand on Tuesday against the Adams State Grizzlies. The game is set for a 6:30 p.m. MT at the Arena-Auditorium in Laramie.
