LARAMIE, Wyo. (Jan. 23, 2017) – The Wyoming women’s basketball team takes its nine-game winning streak on the road this week against the UNLV Lady Rebels for a Wednesday night matchup. The Cowgirls enter the contest with a 15-3 overall record and 7-0 in league play after a 68-52 victory over New Mexico on Saturday. For the first time since the 2012-13 season, the Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball program received a vote in either the AP or the Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll. In the Jan. 23 Associated Press Poll, the Cowgirls received two votes for 37th among all schools. The last time they received votes was February 11, 2013. The Cowgirls are currently on a nine-game winning streak which is the longest since 12 in 2007-08. The 7-0 start in conference is a program best and the 15-3 season-best start through 18 games is the best since the 2007-08 season.
Three Cowgirls finished the night in double-figures led by junior Natalie Baker who finished with a season-high 18 points along with six boards against the Lobos. Junior Liv Roberts recorded her third straight double-double with 14 points and a career-high 15 points followed by Hailey Ligocki with 14 points and three assists. Freshman Taylor Rusk chipped in nine points and two assists in 25 minutes of action. The Cowgirls shot 24-54 (.444) from the field, 12-16 (.750) from the free throw line and out rebounded the Lobos, 40-31. Wyoming recorded 16 assists on 24 baskets and recorded 20 points off the bench.
Roberts, who earned Mountain West player of the week honors today, leads the team averaging 15.9 points and 8.1 rebounds plus 2.3 assists. She ranks fourth in the MW in scoring fifth in field goal percentage, sixth in rebounding. In league games, she is second in scoring and three-point field goal percentage and fourth in rebounding. Sophomore Marta Gomez follows with 9.8 points and 3.4 rebounds while Baker is adding 5.6 rebounds plus 9.6 points.
UW is shooting 437-987 (.443) from the field and 144-364 (.396) from beyond the arc. The Cowgirls are also outscoring opponents 69.2-53.9 and out rebounding teams 36.7-32.7. Wyoming ranks first in field goal percentage, three point field goal percentage, free throw percentage and assists.
UNLV enters the contest with a 13-6 overall mark and 4-3 in conference action. Last time out, they defeated the Air Force Falcons, 60-56. Junior Dakota Gonzalez is averaging a team-high 12.4 points plus 5.4 rebounds. Sophomores Paris Strawther and Katie Powell lead the team in rebounding with 6.2 rpg. As a squad, the Lady Rebels are shooting 418-1120 (.373) from the field, averaging 61.9 points and 40.8 rebounds per contest.
This will be the 45th meeting between the two schools with the series tied at 22. The last time the two teams met was December 31, 2016 with the Cowgirls earning a 79-57 win in Laramie. The Lady Rebels are coached by Kathy Olivier who is in her ninth season.
