LARAMIE, Wyo. (Nov. 30, 2016) – The Wyoming women’s basketball team will return home for its second three-game homestand of the season against the Southern Utah Thunderbirds on Friday night. The Cowgirls enter the week with a 4-2 overall mark after a 63-50 loss against Drake on Sunday afternoon. Junior Liv Roberts finished the night with a team-leading 17 points along with five rebounds. She was 7-14 (.500) from the field and added three steals and two assists. Sophomore guard Clara Tapia recorded 13 points and four rebounds while junior Natalie Baker ended her night with eight points. Wyoming shot 19-of-44 (.432) from the field and 8-of-21 (.381) from beyond the arc.
UW is shooting 135-of-332 (.407) from the field and 46-of-134 (.343) from beyond the arc. The Cowgirls are also outscoring opponents 62.3-48.5 and out rebounding teams 37.7-30.0.
Southern Utah is currently 3-1 overall and will play Utah tonight prior to facing the Cowgirls. Sophomore forward Darri Frandsen leads the way averaging 13.8 points and 9.0 rebounds per contest. Senior guard Jamie Smith is adding 13.3 points followed by freshman guard Rebecca Cardenas with 9.5 points and 7.5 boards. As a squad, the Thunderbirds are shooting 108-255 (.424) from the field and averaging 72.3 points per contest.
This will be the eighth meeting between the two schools. UW holds a 4-3 advantage. The last time the two teams met was Nov. 28, 2003 with Southern Utah winning 70-69 in overtime. The Thunderbirds are coached by Chris Boettcher who is in his third season with the program.
