Josh Allen, a sophomore from the University of Wyoming, has been selected as the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week. He earns the honor over seven other Manning Award Stars of the Week in the Allstate Sugar Bowl's Facebook contest.
Allen, a Firebaugh, Calif., native, completed 16-of-26 passes for 261 yards and four touchdowns, while adding 66 rushing yards and a score to lead the Cowboys to their fifth straight win (their longest streak since 1998) in a 52-28 Mountain West win over Utah State.
He had career highs in total offense (327 yards), touchdown passes (4) and TDs responsible for (5), and connected with eight different receivers on his way to being named the Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week. The Cowboys will travel to Las Vegas seeking their sixth consecutive win on Saturday against UNLV.
Allen's top competition came from Washington State’s Luke Falk and Nick Fitzgerald of Mississippi State. Falk completed 32-of-35 passes for 311 yards and four touchdowns, his seventh 300-yard game of the year, and led the Cougars to their seventh straight win with their most points ever in a Pac-12 game, a 69-7 blowout of Pac-12 rival Arizona. Fitzgerald completed 18-of-31 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for 182 yards and two touchdowns in a 35-28 upset of No. 4 Texas A&M.
While the Manning Award selected 30 quarterbacks for its preseason Watch List all quarterbacks remain eligible for the honor. Midseason additions to the Watch List will be announced on Wednesday, October 12. The list of 10 finalists will be released on Wednesday, November 30. The winner will be announced on Wednesday, January 11.
